data logger are awesome. How many values a second does it log?

Do you have excel? i'd love to see some spread sheets on what you log.

Do you know how to use it? i could give you some tips if you like. i use one for obd I systems for my rally car. I'm pretty sure there are only some differences, like the o2 sensors reading in % rather than volts.

The data provided by the CL-S ECU does show O2 voltage and Fuel Trim % values.

Yep, I got in the mail today. I do appreciate if you can help me use well. I do have excel and I can export to excel too!. I did a small 10 min trips around the block. If you are interested I can email the .xls file.

I can log any 4 of the following values:

The downside, it logs 4 values at once at a rate of 1 sample each 5 sec. That is too low for a drag racing that ends in 15sec! It is great for keeping an eye on commuting and long trips.

I wished if it was able to do 1 sample each 100 ms! or 10 sample per sec. It is flashable firmware and software can be upgraded. Let us hope the sampling hardware is fast enough.

I formated the expprted text to a nice looking excel file and then did a copy and paste.

Sure it works. First to notice, Coolant temp will stabilize at 183F, Air Intake temp arpund 116F, ambient is 68F. and min engine load of 30% even at idle!

This is one of the intended uses of this logger! If you are drving a corporate car, this is the big brother watching you all the time.

25 years ago I a job with the post office (don't laugh it payed for my college),, all the delivery vans had a crude version of this,,, it monitor how many times you opened your door and the duration of time the engine was off or on. Funny thing was mine was always broke, it kept getting a 12 v short to ground.

Remind that is not an OBD-II Scanner. Like I cannot watch in real time what is going on. For tunning this cold be a better option: http://www.obd-2.com/

My email to CarChip Tech Support

Hi,

I just bought your amazing SEMA Award Winning CarChip E/X. However, after doing the inital setup and then the first test drive with the chip installed, I found out the fastest sampling rate at 1 samples per 5 seconds is too low!. The quality of the sampled data is ONLY usefull for slow varaying engine parameters like Coolant Temp and Air Intake Temp.

On the other hand, at a max sampling of 1 per 5 sec, the quality of the samples for engine parameters such as RPMS, Throtle Position, Engine load, even vehicle speed is very bad. The frequency of such signals is high and the sampling will result in under sampling and the sampled signal would be Aliased. The result would be a meaningless data captured!

For example, while braking hard, say my car can go from 40 MPH to 0 in 4 sec... the whole desceleration event would be lost and not captured at all if the event happend in between the samples at 0.2 Hz!.

That is is not accepatble at all!

Please could you include in your next software release an option to increase the maximun sampling rate to say 10-25 per sec?

It is the fact that current OBD-2 devices can stream data at rates of exceeding 25 samples per second.

Thanks a lot.

Regards,

NNH

Now, I am capturing Time, Speed, RPM, Throtle Position (instead of the engine load), and Intake Air Temp (usually 30F higher than Ambient!!!, why?) and Timming Advance.

nashua, sorry i missed this thread. You should have pm'ed me. my bad.

Yeah, thats way to low samples a second. How do you have it connected? diagnostic port?

OBD II loggers are pretty expensive but i think they have software available to buy with the use of a palm pilot.

Hmmm, i should investigate this. Could you post a picture of how the harness you have to connect to your car looks like, or your connection?

I know they have obd II software, but i'll need to know if they harness they make for it is the same, or even adaptable. I'll check it out though.

Is anyone using this intake yet?

also, that intercooler sprayer for my rally car would be so dope. pretty inexpensive too, although i'd probably need a bigger tank.

The intake manifold heats pretty well and keeps that temperature up. There is really nothing simple you can do about it. A phenolic spacer may help and is something I will be looking into. But given enough time it too would allow the temp to creep up that high.

Did you drive it on the highway for extended periods?? That would cause the temp to drop a bit closer to ambient; maybe within 15 degrees. The additional airflow is what helps there.

I did a test last night which I will report about further later on today. But I ran some ice in the IC reservoir and with my garage having a temp of about 95 I was able to see just above 70 from the IAT.

What sucks about the timing advance it that it is only part of the piece. It is what the ECU looks up for an advance value. If there is any knock detected, timing is retarded through the knock retard value and is not visible.

He hooks up to the OBDII port behind the panel in the lower center console.

There are several PALM units available and are not that much. But you do have to have a portable device first. The software is also reasonable but once again, you have to have the device first and in this case a laptop. I have a laptop dedicated to this sitting on my workbench with a wireless connection so I can get on line while turning wrenches.

Lame response from the tech support guy... Anyone can heck the software?

Dear NNH:

A faster sampling rate is only possible with certain communication protocols.

5 seconds is the most frequent rate we can provide which is reliable for all supported protocols.

Regards,

NNH

now, I will be using this data logger to keep an eye on the CAI efficency, drving at around 70 MPH the IAT is still at least 20F above Ambient Temp!... Shouldn't be cloaser to ambient Temp at crusing speeds?

dets,

It is just a chip that you plug immediately into OBD-2 port which is right below " not an ash tray thing" you pop the plastic tab, plug the chip and then put back the plastic tab and you are golden to go. Once back from your trip(s), you unplug the chip get it connected to your PC via a serial cable , download the info and you are can browse the data as mych as you like.

My response:

Brian,

I noted that while logging an Accident event, The CarChip EX is sampling at rate of 1 sample per sec. True it is only 1Hz and not 25 Hz but it is still better that 0.2Hz. Is it possible to email me a special version of the CarChip E/X software with higher sampling rate so I can beta tested on my Acura CL type-S?

If it works that is great, if it does not, then we only tried!.

Thanks,

NNH,

How do you think this would work on one of the "Legendary" Sactown runs???
Every 5 seconds might not be too shabby. Every second would be off the hook!!
I would love to see all the hard braking and acceleration marks I would get on
one of our runs!!!! Keep us posted!!!

the obd II data loggers that i know use a program on a palm pilot that basically reads the info at about 30 samples a second and with all different types of engine parameters. You could delete "check engine" lights and do all other types of fun stuff including purging injector solenoid. Now this program is for 2nd gen DSM's but i haven't asked yet whether or not the software could be applied elsewhere. i'll check.

At work we hook our laptops directly to the car's computer and get all the data in realtime and have some select parameters displayed on the heads-up display... They're all test cars though and it is a bitch to set them up that way, but very very cool to look at and you have the data straight on your laptop to play with.

The members of the VW/Audi community can buy this cool little progam that you can hook up through any computer and monitor every sensor real-time. Simply Plug-n-Play and Only $200. I have the older, serial-cable type. Now they have USB, which is awesome. Check it out: www.ross-tech.com

Now, if someone was willing to program and create a similar program for the CL, that would be

Today, I did a trip to Logan Airport using my 99 Toyota Sienna. I used the CarChip for the first time in the sienna. The intent was to recond the IAT while drivig.

I was astonished to find out he whole trip to logan, the IAT was consitently around 82-84F that was way better than our so called CAI!!!!. on Our CLS with CAI, IAT was at least Ambiant Te,p +30F (or around 95F) our Cold Air intake may be more free flowing but it it is not a Cooler intake. The Injen tube is made fro Al and is good conductor for the heat, so I believe it is traping more heat from the engine bay and heating up the whole intake charge! I may resort to a thremal wrap or replace the whole intake with a plastic tube.

Remind you on the Sienna, I do have a K&N Filter but is still factory air box.
