how often does the filter on the CAI need...
to be cleaned out? Do you guys actually buy the K&N cleaning kit and do a full blown cleaning or just know the dust out with an air compressor and call it a day?

Air compressor? If you read the directions carefully that's one of the many things NOT to do when taking care of the filter. Remove it...shake the dust off and at most brush lightly. But never use compressed air or paint thinner. Then you do the K&N recharger kit.
