How much should brake replacement cost?

Hello:

I have a 2003 ABP CLS Auto I've owned since 2005. The mechanic that I go to said I need to have my rear brakes replaced and rotors only need resurfacing. I asked him to quote me for both rear and front brakes replaced. He quoted something between $500-550 (I can't remember exactly).

I think I trust this mechanic. But, the quote seems a bit on the high side. Can you tell me whether I got a fair quote?

Thanks.

Yeah, sounds a little high. Have you thought about trying to do the brakes yourself? It's not hard at all. The hardest part it breaking the set screws lose that hold the rotor in place, but if you buy an impact screwdriver from PepBoys or AutoZone for like $10 it makes it a lot easier. Other than that it's a pretty simple job, so you'd only have to pay for the labor to have the rotors cut. But if you are going to have them done I'd think it'd be more in the $300 range for f/r.

Dan, thanks for looking the prices up for me.

Trooper, I don't think I want to fix my own car. I am physically lazy. Or, at least, I rather pay for the state of mind that my car will stop when I need it to. But, $500 seems steep.

My gf had her Accord's front pads replaced for 98 without resurfacing...

So is he just resurfacing all the rotors or replacing them? Obviously the pads are being replaced. If you are replacing you might want to look into some better rotors than OEM.

Ha ha, I hear ya, brakes aren't something you want to mess around with if you don't know what you're doing or want to rush the job. I was just saying if you could eliminate the labor part of the job you could save yourself a lot of money. Just what ever you do don't bring it to Midas or Meinakee. It'd be worth the extra $$$ to have it done right the first time.

Any mechanic is going to over charge you if its a private mechanic or at the stealership. Its their job...they gotta make money some how. You should be able to get new rotors and brakes all around for 350-400 if you learn to do it yourself and thats with powerslots and performance pads. Like its been said before its not hard at all. Just my

so get off your lazy butt and get your hands dirty....you'll appreciate your car alot more.

I just had mine done by Acura, I have Rotara rotors all around which they resurfaced for the first time and installed new pads, $250 per axle or $500 total.
I wouldn't call that cheap but not that bad considering I had Acura do it.
I actually went from Axxis pads back to stock with the Rotara's and eliminated the severe brake dust issue with the Axxis pads and the squeaking problem I was having off and on, not to mention I only got 18 months out of the Axxis pads.
The car breaks smoother and very quiet, a bit more fade but not by much.
