How much horsepower can the auto tranny handle?
Sup everyone,
I've got my "new" (28k) 2001 CL-S and i'm loving it, and I'm ready to start tinkering. But i'm slightly cautious because of what I have read about our auto trannies being slightly weak. So how much more horsepower can I safely add? I figure a cold air intake and some headers would put my up around 300 hp? Is this safe? What have you guys done? Any problems?
THanks guys!

hmm... well with the [problems people have had with the auto tranny so far I'd say it can barely handle the 260 it has already... it seems that even CT is using a tranny cooler with their SC kits for the CLS... I guess that means it isn't good enought at dissipating heat to handle that kind of power... a thought might be to do it with your other mods just in case ya know?

i think your first mod should be new rims, then you can sell me one of yours for dirt cheap, since i'm in the area and all...
actually, it doesn't seem that our trannies can handle a stock engine. we're still waiting to see if the replacement trannies are redesigned. if so, i'm jumping on the I/H/E wagon. till then, I'll mod my mountain bike.

1) How much does a tranny cooler cost?
2) How does it work?
3) What's the labor cost (roughly) to install?
Dean, seriously, I want a f*cking brownie and an award if I buy another CT product off you!!!

Hi Dan
(evil grin)
1) tranny cooler is $150 from Comptech including stainless mounts, pre cut hoses and connections included--or you can just get a B&M for $40 and make your own hose connections for about another $10.
2)I will let someone a little smarter than I am handle this one.....
3)Labor is a couple of hours, it is not very difficult from everything I have read about it.
Have no fear, I am still working on that brownie thing for ya, but you may have to settle for a cookie instead.
Thanks
Dean
