how much $ are you willing to loose to get rid of you cl?
ok my tranny has been fine, but im paranoid about it and want to feel confident about driving my car...i owe a lot on my 01 cl-s w/32k on it...like 21k...ouch...blue book trade is 16.5k...so i would eat 4500$ if i where to trade it...anyone dealt with a similar situation or contimpating the same thing as i am...plus all these tranny storied i read in here make me more inclined to take a personal loan for 5k just to rid of this car...though its been good to me so far and i do like it a lot

I don't understand why you're so worried about the tranny. If it goes, it goes. Enjoy the car. You do know that the tranny has a warranty extension up to 100k miles, right?
I have 68k miles and I'm still (knock on wood) on my first tranny. BTW, after getting this supercharger, I don't think there's anything in this price range that I'd trade "up" to.

if you like your CL, why worry about it? you have 68K miles left on the warranty extension and whatever you trade your car in for would be a downgrade unless you're ready to take yet another hit. keep your car and you'll be fine.
btw, i have almost 60K on my first tranny.

CLS 6MT Navi
THe finances are up to you, everyone is different. I wouldn't so much want to just ditch a car as opposed to selling it to get a specific one I really want, know what I mean?
My situation was a little different. I got out of a white/tan 03 6 speed cause I wanted a better color combo and Navi. I got lucky and found a good buyer and got a great deal on a low mileage anthracite 6 speed. I was looking at trading in my white to a dealer for about $4k less! I only paid $750 more for a 6 speed Navi with 7500 miles (plus tax). I was happy.
If you really are dying for a different car, I say go for it, if you can afford it... you only live twice!

when you trade it in, tell your sales person that you got a higher trade in value at a different dealership that you were gonna buy a different car in and theyll match it to get the sale. work twice according to my friends

What do you plan on buying? Rolling in the negative equity, you are basically paying $4500 more than a vehicle is worth. I wouldn't over pay 4500 for any car. You'll be even more upside down on the next loan.
Paying too much for a car, then trading-in = double your losses.
Sell it yourself (and get more than 16,500), or keep it.

I have 74k on my 01CLS with the first tranny. If you are really happy with the car I would keep it until about 90k and try to pay that loan down some before you trade. If not you will be in the same situation with the next car you end up wanting to get rid of it.

If the car is covered to 100k, don't sweat it. My brother ate like $5K on his and has this astronomical payment on a 350Z (and he had to finance it for like 6 yrs.) It's so not worth it. Save your $ for beer.
----point of fact---- my '01 CL blew the tranny at 30K the Acura dealer picked up the car at my house and gave me an RL to drive while mine was in the shop. it's run fine so far.

Everyone I know with an acura (CL or TL) has had NO problems with the trannies. Luck of the draw? Who knows ... 5% to 10% failure rate means that you have a 1 in 10 chance of failure. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it's just an excuss to get a new car. I have a 6speed so I don't have to worry about it but I plan on keeping mine for 4 years or so (Just got it in Feb 03).

The other thing to think about is with that $5K you'd be losing... you might as well keep the car and IF the tranny does go out after the 100K warranty, you can spend the $5K you would have lost to replace the tranny with another one then.

I'm willing to lose about $3k per year. My 6spd is almost 2 years old, and I'd be suprised if a dealer would give me 20K for it. Looks like I'll have to drive it for 10 years to lose only 3K per year After that, I'll make the CLS a winter beater

Keep also in mind that although our cars are 'similar'.. we and the way each of us drives is quite different - that is another factor adding to 'when' trannies fail.. Of course if they have defective cheap ass gears - they will fail... And since this is not 1920s... chances are the failure if it will occur - it will occur gradually... i.e. letting you know that something is messing up.
Worrying about it is only killing your pleasure... When I heard that trannies fail in our cars... I even started driving MORE aggressively.. i.e. getting MORE pleasure out of it .. i.e. to speed up the failure.. if it will happen... Since 7/100k extended waranty is there... your 'role' is to make it fail sooner.. when you think about it ... If you do not trust Acura's 4/50k road assistance - get a AAA, make sure you have a charger.. for your cell... and you are pretty much protected anywhere in US... I just put in 7500 driving across US... and for anyone having Cingular service - I switched from Verizon - it worked beautifully in about 95% of places i've visited... - excluding some streches of GOD knowing where in Arizona .... on small, unknown highways...

yeah you guys talk some truth, its eithier keep it and take what you can around 90-100K in miles, ( which will be probably very little) Or take the loss and trade it in, if you cant sell it private.
For me as i drive alot of mikes, around 56-58K, another 6months, i'll see what the dealer offers, if i can't sell it private. If its no dice, then i'll keep it.

I only got $700 for my 94 Tbird (v8 w/ 136K miles on it), but the tranny was dieing on that one.
If Acura comes out with a replacement coupe, I might be interested to see what they'd give me for mine in trade for a new one...
