i have a bel 985... i live in canada where they are banned... it was never detected. Was only arrested once, with a laser gun and I was the only one speeding so my radar was not able to detect it.

A Bel 980 (or something like that). I love it. Better to have it than not. If you cannot go the $400+ for a Valentine, go with whatever you can afford.

Has saved me numerous times...

Got my V1 earlier this week and still learning how to interpret the falses. My original intent was to leave it on All Bogeys for a while so I could distinguish real threats from door openers, but after 2 days I couldn't stand it anymore. I pinned the detector at 9 with full strength and both X and K lit up for about 15 seconds when I drove by the Convention Center downtown :P I have it in Adv Logic mode now since here they seem to use laser more than anything else on the interstates. On longer non-commute drives (like back to NJ to see the folks), I'd prolly turn it back to All or normal Logic. It's hard as hell to make heads or tails of things when you live in an a semi/urban area... but I could see how it would really shine on the NJ turnpike or parkway where you'd get much fewer strong falses. I will definitely say the directional arrow alone makes it worth it's price tag. Nothing used to bother me more with old detectors than getting a hit and needing to wait 10 seconds to determine where it's coming from as you listen to the strength change... which most times meant you had already passed by the origin.

I think I want the remote display now

too funny..

Just looked at the Poll, seems Escort/Passport & V1 are tied neck and neck.

I've got a 7500, but would like to buy an 8500. Anyone need some money and willing to do a trade + some cash

My radar detector has kept my but out of the fire on many occasions. It has the "detector" mounted behind the grill on my F-150 and hard wired to the display unit in my dash.
I will not own another car without one.

985 for me. It has worked very well and has exeeded my expectations. As far as directional antannae on the Valantine? I'm usually too busy slowing down to initially care about which direction Johnny's coming from. So in all honesty, lt would be nice to have that info but I don't think that I would pay a premium for it. If the Bel goes off, I check my speed and adjust if needed. It's that simple.

How would you know, Chicago police sit on the Lake Shore with a radar gun that's mounted on the outside of the back window pointing down the Drive near Lincoln Park that you can pickup with even an Escort back at the Fountain. Of course you're gonna think the Escort shines!

j/k

V1 is not a waste when you consider the extra money spent on the arrows and extra range is well worth it.

People suddenly saying nothing can hold a candle to the V1? Wake up. I've also used both side by side.

Range is comparable. Don't tell me you can't compare. Arrows.......advantage V1.

8500 falses a lot less, less annoying. Comparable when it is also $100 less.

Had a V1... sold it to a member after keeping it for a month.

Too many false alarms = a frantic speeder who doesnt know whether to slow down or not.

Oh ya, its useless against an instant-on radar

It takes instant-on a second or two to register your speed. I've avoided tickets because i have good reaction time And having other cars around you that will get clocked is a bonus, you'll definitely pick up a bounce off of them.

I was getting ready to say the same thing. I've beat instant-on being the first car in front and all alone on the wide-open deserted road all by myself...and I still beat the instant-on radar. No shit.

I won't like, I've been hit by instant-on and subsequently ticketed maybe about 10 times but I can't even begin to count how many times I have beat it....maybe 100 times in 15 years.

If anyone thinks the V1, or 8500 fales more then the other your either in a area with alot of radar siganls, or it's not in the correct mode. I had both. They false the same in my area & in my driving. I've also been hit with instant on a few times & didn't get ticketed. Maybe the cop just didn't feel like chasing me?

None of them are a waste of money (unless you live somewhere where radar is not used) if they save you from getting a ticket. I'll bet there is not one person on this forum who absolutely drives the speed limit! (I said absolutely. )

I use one and it has saved me more than once.
