How Maintenence Req. Light works?

i was just curious. is this thing the same as those service lights found on Mercedes and BMWs where they monitor how dirty the oil is, how many cold starts and how many short trips you have taken?

Its hooked up to your odometer to go off in certian intervals first it will trun yellow, then red. Wait till you hit 90K and it goes from green to red. This is in the Legend, but im sure its the same.
