Thumbs up How I mounted my Motonav tn765t

How I mounted my Motonav tn765t Mon Nov 29, 2010 3:27 am
I had my motonav mounted in my sunglass visor holder that is attached to the roof of my car. Turned out pretty well, although these pictures don't do it justice. The only annoying thing, which actually isn't very annoying, is that I cannot see the top .5" of the GPS which isn't too much of a problem. I routed the power wire behind the dash and up the side of the car. Pretty simple, actually.

The GPS doesn't block the rear-view mirror either.

The neat thing is that I can always have it plugged in and it turns on/off automatically with the car. The satellite reception is great, no problems. Just have my fingers crossed for the next map update which should be out soon, hopefully. Got this GPS from the sears thanksgiving day sale!

That is an akward location for a GPS. Almost dangerous because it forces you to look up while driving.

it'd be tight if you could make it pop up out of the center of the dash!

lol cmon guys...I know it doesn't look that good in the pics, but it's not so bad. I rather have this setup than my previous suction cup/ friction mount setup. And I hardly ever look up at it because I listen to the prompts. I'll admit, it does look sorta crappy...but for a 30 minute job I think its pretty descent. The visor opened down, but know it won't go back up lol...no bother, though.
This is a pretty low profile setup surprisingly because my friend didn't notice it up there until a several minutes later after he sat in the car.

I don't know why the other pictures aren't showing up in the thread.

And @StreetKA: This beats having a double din for me in two ways.

1) Thieves don't really notice it...good considering where I live and 2) I rather not spend $1000+ on a double din setup. This GPS has all the bells and whistles you can ask for minus the large screen.

I was actually thinking about modifying the CD holder in our dash in a way to let a GPS pop out of it. But that was too much work, so my friend suggested that I should just put it in the visor and be done with it.

BTW, you can always shave the lower side of the visor and slide the GPS down and thus, no more obstruction. I might do that over winter break when i'm out of school. Also I forgot to mention that it is being held with Velcro up there.

I modded my sunglass holder to hold an Apexi VAFC. Mine is on a sliding plate that drops down when the holder opens up. That way I can see the entire screen.

Definitely some room for improvement based on NSXNEXT'S post.

If you could modify it a bit I think it would be a good spot.

If you were good with fiberglass you could mold it into the steering column cover. But then you wont be able to hide it.

But if theft really is the biggest issue, most cell phones (especially Android) have GPS built in. I use that on my phone and its more accurate then any of the other full-fledged nav units Ive used since it uses Google Maps and is always updating.

I used pieces of mdf (medium density fiberboard) to cut the curved shapes on the sides
The back of the mdf peices have grooves cut about halfway down from the top to accept the aluminum plate that the VAFC rides on. It slides down when you open the holder. The aluminum plate has two tabs at the top of it that ride in the groove and stop when they hit the bottom of the groove.
I used epoxy putty to make it look more molded
Shot it with SSM paint.

I did this many many moons ago. It was a lot of trial and error.

Was considering getting a GPS unit. Thanks to this thread I dunno if I'll get an in-dash nav, or a standalone one.

New Google maps update on Android 2.3 works in offline mode, so no network connection required. Just hop on wifi to load everything and use GPS when you see fit.

Well with Verizon you have to sign up for a $15/month data plan just to get the phone. Even if I just wanted a phone with a QWERTY keyboard, I'd have to get a data plan with them, too.
