How fast is.....
The BMW 540i WAGON with an automatic??
I was driving down the road the other day about 5-6 car lengths ahead of this bimmer wagon. I see him hit it, so I did too. We were going about 45 in a 40. He had some momentum, so he got up pretty close to my tail, but by then I was in the best part of 2nd gear and started to pull on him. In the span of a few seconds, he stopped gaining on me and I started to pull on him pretty good. I was watching him the whole time and I didn't see any drastic change in his momentum - ya know... like he let off the gas or something. So I put a little distance on him and then let off. I slow back down to about 50-55 and he slowly passes me by. I see that it's a 540?? Apparently, he wasn't trying. Do you all agree?? Maybe we can edge one out, but I was pulling really hard on him. Just doesn't seem right...

I am preety sure the manual does 0-60 in about 5.8 seconds. Being that BMW doesnt make the best autos its probably at about 6.8 in the auto. In that instance (cruising at 40) the transmission shouldnt have mattered much except for driveline power loss.
Anyway they arent much heaver than the sedan (100lbs??) so im guessing it could at least hang with us.

Typical response coming from a 14 year old who knows very little about performance. As for the automatic issue and BMW, lets not go there. You probably think that the Z28 has the best 'auto' tranny available or whatever else your parents own. As a clarification, the 2000 540i wagaon automatic does 0-60 in approx. 6.2 sec. and runs the 1/4 mile in 14.8 @ trap speed of 96 MPH. Not bad for a crappy auto huh?

Oh how I'm waiting to get a butt-flaming here... However, I ran into a 540i on the weekend, and he stopped trying to run with me after a couple of runs. He just looked over at the car, and had a stunned look. I would guess it had an auto, but I could hear the shifts.
Perhaps another case of poor shifting/piloting skills...
Sure is a nice looking car though!
