how do you fix a curb rash?

I went thru the ATM drive-thru the other day. The lane was so tight that when I pulled away, one of the front wheels rubbed against the curb pretty good. I heard that some wheel shops repair/refinish wheels. Anyone know about this or any other method of getting the deep scratch on my wheel out?

Curb rash is a bitch to fix. You need to have it polished at an extremely high speed and it isn't guaranteed. Best thing to do is take it to a shop that does it (they most likely send it out) and for about $75 - $150 they will repair the scratches and dip the lip or whatever it takes to repair it.

"dip the lip"? That sounds like something altogether different, and a lot more fun. Just not with a car rim.

A new rim is about $300 and remanufactoring or repolishing is about $100. You do the math. Also, here is a site:

how to avoid it? Don't do it in the first place.. :-) Actually, try calling som tire shops and ask around. After market rim shops will usually know of someone you can go to. I know of one in the bay area called Wheel Techniques in Campbell. They quoted me at 75 -150 depending on whether they could fix the scrape, or whether they would need to charge a Core Charge and order a new rim. I wish you luck.

I 2nd that opinion.

When I had the OEM wheels on, I had a valet ruin one (it was sold on EBay -- they had a post on here of the wheel the dealer kept).

I went by three different "wheel-repair-shops" and all of them said they would "try" to repair the wheel, but said I would notice up close.

There are some machine marks on the wheel that they said would be very difficult to match and wouldn't guarantee the job.

Welcome to the club

BTW -- The SSRs and Toyos I now have, have saved my wallet many times over

Is that true for the dealerships here in the States, too?

It depends -- I got burned for about $300, but I keep hearing about dealers giving breaks to "favorite" customers. I sure don't think the dealers are paying $300/wheel.

But then again, I don't take my car to the dealer every 3 months to have them dance around the car 3 times with a Voodo doll and pay them $200.00 for it.
