HORRIBLE Gas Mileage ... again !!!

Filled up about a week or so ago, been on vacation, but still doin some light city driving ... fuel gauge this morning is at 1/2 tank remaining, and I've only traveled 90 FREAKIN' miles !!! (I reset the trip odometer every fill-up)

THIS WINTER WEATHER IS KILLIN ME !!!

If I'm LUCKY, the low fuel light will come on at 200 miles !!!

THIS CANNOT ONLY BE HAPPENING TO ME ?? LOL!

City driving is HORRIBLE for this car, it seems !!!

People tell me it's because of the way I drive, and then I hear stories of people 'doin 80 all the time' and getting great mileage ... even when I DO highway driving, my mileage is NOT much better ...

But maybe 200 miles a TANK in the city and I gotta fill up again ?!? You GOTTA be kiddin me !!

I get around 120 miles to 1/2 tank and about 250 per tank. That works out to around 17 mpg. Not as good as I hoped for. I also read about people getting 20-24 mpg around town. That would be great. I wonder what they are doing that we are not.

I've stopped resetting my trip odometer - the gas mileage is all over the place with this car and it was starting to drive me crazy - I'm much happier now!

Heh heh... sorry dez!!

I filled up yesterday and got my 2nd worst city gas mileage ever.... 19.09mpg!!! I usually avg about 20.5 in the city - gotten as good as 22.5. I don't know what I'm doing right!! My trip to work is only 2.5 miles so I do LOTS of short trips that is supposed to be bad for gas mileage. Plus I get on it a lot????

I'm seeing about 300 miles on a tank under normal driving conditions (city/highway). As soon as I get on it, the mileage drops big time. Remember we are running an engine that produces 260 hp without turbo or supercharger. Ive seen quite a few v-8's that dont make this much hp. The v-8 mustang produces about the same hp that we do. (a little more perhaps)

I too have noticed a marked drop in my mileage as the cold weather has set in, I suppose it's cuz the ECU senses the increased O2 levels and as such it bumps up the fuel mixture too...and that's why our cars are that much faster in the winter too

My previous car (Intrepid) had a trip computer that had the MPG built in. I was getting around 23.5MPG during the summer. Before I traded it in for the CL-S a week and a half ago it was down to 20.5MPG. Goes to show you that the cold weather has a pretty big impact.

My mileage has dipped also in the cold and snow. My worst mileage was 19.6 with mostly city driving however my summer/fall mileage of 26MPG has definately dipped. Take a look here:

So far this winter I've been getting about 20-21 mpg under mixed highway/city driving. The past summer/fall I've gotten anywhere from 23 to 27-28 mpg depending on the ratio of highway to city driving that I do. Before that, when I had my 4-cyl.accord, my gas mileage was around 29-30 mpg under similar highway/city driving.

When I first got the car i was getting 300-315 miles to the tank full. Just as the "break-in" period ended, the cold weather hit. I am now getting 255-270. I would think 45 miles per tankfull is too significant a drop to just blame on the cold.

As stated above, it's not the "cold", it's the
oxygenated fuel. You're going to lose at least
10% on mileage..

I don't know about the percentage, but yes, oxygenated fuel will decrease gas mileage. However, cold weather will also decrease gas mileage because the air is denser. Which means more air gets into the engine, which means the engine needs more gas to maintain the proper mix.

I've been in my baby since June, She has never been gotten better than 250 for even light city driving, I don't dog it at first, but a little aggressive driving gives me better milege for some wierd reason. For Hwy i never get better than 270, and it's pissing me off hearing all these 300 and 350. Damn dealer is no help with this problem

My tank is about 3/4 gone and my odometer reads 215 miles....this is pretty good considering I had my car turned on for about 30 minutes trying to jump another car...oh well I'll fill it up again tommorow. Damn these gas prices are sick.

Does anyone know what the period (start date to end date) is for mandating that nasty oxygenated fuel in Los Angeles (maybe certain metro. areas of California)?

If the air was really cold, and someone was driving very easy, I would think that the throttle plate would not have to be open as much (as on a very warm day) for a given load and speed (like driving 30mph on a flat street). Engines don't like having to suck against a closed (nearly closed throttle plate). Take a vacuum cleaner and hold your hand over the intake.

The older smog cars used to have pre-heaters installed to heat the air up -- lousy for power, but good for old-style emission control.

WOW:

Can some of the folks who are getting 20 mpg+ around town let us know how they are driving the car (e.g. -- are you getting the car into D5 and trying to keep it there if possible??)

Couldn't tell ya about the gas mileage of the CL-S, but do you guys sense a trend of increased fuel consumption in ALL cars ever since we left the econobox bent of the 80's and wallowed into the SUV-expectations of the '90s and '00s?

BTW (and surprisingly), not all of the old-school V8's were guzzlers.

Hmmm... I don't know about that. It seems to me that any given engine by a manufacturer is getting both more horsepower and better gas mileage as time goes on. For example:
'88-91 Civic Si - 108hp, 28/32
'92-95 Civic Si - 125hp, 29/35
'96-00 Civic EX - 127hp, 29/35
'01 Civic EX - 127hp, 31/38

Seems as though all the 3.0 V6's about 5-10 yrs ago were getting 17-19/25-27 with about 180hp, now they're all around 20/28 with 200hp.

Now, there are a lot more V6 and V8 cars being sold, so a manufacturers CAFE avg might be decreasing, but I think the engines are generally getting more efficient.

My mileage has been suffering lately as well.
I have been getting between 17-19 the last couple of tanks.

I was averaging 22-24 all summer and had a high of 32.5 on a long trip to Canada.

Since the purchase in May, my best MPG is 28.9 (coming back from Tucson at about 90mph) and my worst is 20.9. I've been averaging about 22 in the city and about 26 on the highway. Hope this helps.

So far I have noticed no change in gas mileage since I bought the car in the beginning of September. I do the same thing when it comes to hitting the reset button on the trip odometer everytime I fill up. I get between 250 and 290 miles before filling up. It all depends on how foolish I feel that day. I just don't know how anyone can get over 300miles. When I was breaking in my car, I wouldn't go over 55mph and I still could never reach 300miles. I drive 46 miles a day to and from work. Most of which are highway miles. I couldn't even reach 300miles on one tank going to and from Atlantic City but I think that's b/c my average speed was 90.

I filled up before crossing the New York border so I wouldn’t have to buy gas in Canada.
That tank got me all the way home.

Damn, see .. I KNEW it wasn't just me !!! Thanks for everyone's input !
But why is it, that around a month ago, I was able to go 360 miles before I had to fill up ??? The low fuel light came on at around 325 and I pushed it ... It couldn't have JUST been because it was mainly HIGHWAY miles. And even then, when I filled up, the car only took around 15 gallons - meaning there was still 2 gallons left.

That's another thing that irks me, that damn fuel light comes on TOO early --

So, this morning I'm at 135 miles (did a lil driving yesterday) and I got around 1/4 tank left -- SICKENING !!! I don't even wanna SEE that damn light when it comes on this time - I'm guessing 175 miles and it'll be on -- anyone wanna figure THAT HORRIBLE GAS MILEAGE ? LOL!

The next fill up should be interesting ...
