Vin is 00000187. I do think the first early runs had better parts.......most of the failures are well beyond my run date......
I would have to concur. My CL-S was in the first 50 off the assembly line, and thru 40k miles I never had a transmission hiccup.

While I'm pissed that this doesn't cover CL/TLs, I'm holding out hope that this opens the door for us to pressure for some customer satisfaction. There's no way the 100k warranty really puts me at ease over the long run. My understanding is that the 100k warranty doesn't apply to your replacement tranny, or does it?

My TLS was number 552 and I thought the same thing . . . until 2 weeks ago when it started acting up . . . so far though is just once in a while, but it's not good.

I've had several cars with more than 100k on them. I've driven every one of them the same . . two of them had almost 200k on them and the only thing ever done on them was a shift kit on one and a torque converter on the other. Actually, one had 149k and my brother took it to 179k, and my other one had 230k+ and it ran 13s with street tires and lower 12s with street slicks. I also pulled a boat with it and even raced a Vet in it with the boat and 4 of us in the car . . . and won. I drove it like that for 8 years and still have the tranny sitting in my brother's shop.

CLS recall is something would happen if it did happen for the SUVs!!

Just wait and see. As for me, I bought my CLS on June 15th 2000 and my tranny is solid!.. I complained about rough shifting when cold, Acura tech said:" Can't replicate".

Nahsua.

Very strange. I wonder what's different about our early trannies?

Same tranny, too much power. Honda's have seriously upped the power in recent years but clearly, no beefed up tranny.

For those that don't know, when u go F/I to add more power, either the tranny is reinforced or a stronger tranny is put in to handle the extra power.

No problems with my '01 CL-S since I bought it 06/00(too lazy to check the VIN, but I think I'm 763). And, I've been s/c'd for the past month.

EricL has posted a long 20 plus page of findings about the CL tranny failures etc....They mentioned the early model transmission were being built by a different company than today. So apparently Honda sub-contracted the manufacturing of certain parts to a company providing "cheap stretched" metal and since then failure's have been happening. All I know is mine is built on the second day, as opposed to months later when the change happened......

Don't give me this "Honda trannys can't handle the power of the newer cars" shit!

Hondas and Acuras ought to be some of the easiest cars on their trannys since no power is really developed until ultra-high revs unlike most other cars that have significantly more low end torque to deal with.

This is all very disheartening. If my tranny goes at 110k miles and they try to hit me up for the cost I'm going to freak out since I know I'll be paying to replace a defective part with another part, that, in all liklihood, is also defective.

Could they make anyone pay for a new tranny without proving that they are giving you one that has the problem fixed?

It doesn't seem like they should be able to sell you a tranny that they know is bad.

Damn.

WHy not? Let's use the family car V-6 Accord as an example.
Only I-4 offered for the longest, tops out at 145hp
2.5 liter V-6 finally offered, 170hp
3.0 liter V-6 offered, 200hp
3.0 liter (I think) V-6 offered, 240hp

That is a huge jump, a 20% increase.

Vigor- I-5 176hp
TL 3.2 (forget the 2.5) 200hp
TL 3.2 225hp
TL-S 260 hp
TL 270hp

We have a company new to the high horsepower game with cars sold to the masses. Clearly they did not anticipate these problems.

Mind u the 1st Odyessy was an Isuzu (am I correct or did Isuzu badge it from Honda?) and the 1st Acura SUV an Isuzu (Trooper). Honda is brand new in all these segments. They might not have been fully prepared for the wear and tear of these new rides.

I can't believe this shit! The only thing that is made from Japan is taking a dump. I thought the tranny is going to outlast our rattle box since it is the only part(major part) made in Japan. Man am I wrong. I think Honda should step up and offer our tranny a lifetime warranty to the original ower.

I hopr the later production 01 CLS aren't affected any different than the earlier ones.

I'm # 11440.

I haven't had any problems so far though and I'm @ 40k miles.

this just shows how deep honda's auto trans problems go. Accord I4 & V6, Prelude I4, CL/TL V6, Odessy V6, Pilot/MDX V6...... its all mainstream. these aren't niche vehicles. these vehicles account for the bulk of honda's US sales. what an embarassment. and as time marches on anyone trying to sell or trade one of these mistakes will really be stuck. no one will want anything to do with them.

not true. theres alot of people that dont know of these tranny problems. When I talk to local CL owners, letting them know about the board. 95% of them dont even know about the problems until I say something about it.

This really does suck because I guess they worry more about minivans and SUVs than coupes

Can't a lawyer jump on these issues? We're up to like 7 different vehicles that have just about the same issues and have depreciated millions of cars and millions of dollars out of our pockets..

For me the worst part is I absolutely love the car and I don't want to get rid of it at 100k.. If they would fix the problem or extend the warranty further I'd be ecstatic..

Edit: However I'm at 67k on my 01cls without a tranny failure but it still worries me b/c I assume it's just a matter of time..

Jonei:
I hear ya. I don't feel comfortable jumping in my CL and going on a "long" trip. I worry too much about breaking down in the middle of no where and being stranded. So it now a car just for driving around my town etc.....I will not feel comfortable driving it to LA and back as I did when I first bought it. As I approach 73,000 miles I worry too ! When will it fail ????????????

I'm driving a 2003 Accord EX-v6 (240hp with 5EAT) I think that it is only time before Honda places the 7th gen Accord on the list as well. There has been one documented case of a 7th Gen Accord having the same problem as the stated MDX and Odyssee; Transmission failed and locked up causing the driver to make an emergency stop on the side of the road.

I truly believe the very best thing to do is begin contacting Honda... Not just one letter, but over and over and over again. Write to your service centers and local honda dealers. The letters do not have to be of great length, but I feel as though if Honda starts recieving truck loads of letters from owners that are pissed Honda may begin to get a better clue.

The biggest problem I have with my car is that my local dealership can't fix a damn thing and they always assume I am a dumbass. I explain to them countless techincal pieces about our cars and they look at me with a blank face and tell me they will have a technician look at it.

In closing, I almost find all of this funny. It has gotten so out of hand but yet honda does nothing to actually fix the problem... ie contact Hydramatic (The company that builds transmissions for general motors and build a transmission that can handle a hell of a lot of power) Because this is not a problem with too much power, its a problem with junk parts.

Have a look at this thread

http://www.acura-cl.com/forums/showt...hreadid=137106

At this point anything is worth a try, Its really a nice car, but no matter at what point you trade this car in its going to cost you, due to the tranny issues.

And the Q i ask. who is going to want to buy a CL with over 100K, knowing that once the tranny fails, its going to be replaced with 1 just like it with the same issues and it costing YOU $$$$$.

And BTW not ONE company that offers extended warrenties offer anything for the CL/TL after 102,000 miles.

I like to know what EricL views are on the issue....

Something must be done, otherwise where all going to be taken no matter what way you look at it.
