Honda Now Japan's Number Two
Honda boosted production by 6.8 percent in 2001, which pushed it ahead of rival Nissan to become Japan’s second-largest automaker. Honda made 2.65 million cars and light trucks in 2001, while Nissan’s five-percent cut in production dropped its annual output to 2.47 million vehicles. On top: Toyota, which saw its own build rate drop by nearly a percent to 5.13 million vehicles. Rounding out the top five were Mitsubishi at 1.67 million vehicles and Mazda at just less than 870,000.
