Honda 1000 or R1

Been getting the itch to trade up my bike. I have a 99 ZX-7R. Love the bike. Want fuel injection. Not a big fan of the ZX-10. I do not like the looks. Not a big Gixxer fan - great bikes - not for me. Therefore, it is the new Honda - got a buddy whose step-dad owns the local Honda shop - or the new R1. Kind of prefer the R1, but the Honda is pretty trick with the new electronic steernig damper and may be able to get a better price on the Honda.

Thoughts?

R1 for sho. Looks so much better than the H. And even if it is faster, you will never be able to tell as there are extremely few people who can ride these bikes at their limits.

I have seen some stuff on the R1 and as I said I prefer it, but was thinking I may be able to get a decent price on the Honda - plus the Honda I think has the edge in terms of reliability. On the other hand, in the past the Honda litre bikes I have ridden always seem to mash my balls - something about the tank which I do not like.

And oh yeah I think the R1 only does 189 mph, not 200. Maybe, with a tailwind, lol.

I have had gixxer 1000 before and I loved the speed, and If I were to get a bike right now it woould be tough.

I have never owned an R1, but have rode many of them. The 2004 is an awsome piece of machinery for sure.

Although I have owned 2 Honda motorcycles and reliability is well proven. I have not seen too many specs on the bike, even with this I would still choose the

CBR1000RR.... Couldnt pin point an exact reason why but I love the looks, reputation, and power.

Let us know what you choose and you will have to post pics

I think the CBR will be a comparable machine or at least Honda would like to think so - the new ZX-10 was supposed to be in that class, but does not have the power or looks. It will be interesting to see what the final power is on the CBR. I guess I will have to go seem them both in person. I like the looks of the R1, but then again the new CBR ain't too shabby. Can't wait to see what kind of screwing the dealer is going to offer me...might have to bring the K-y.

CBR 1000 weighs 396 dry & has 173 HP. That's too close to call any hands-down winner out of it & the R1.

This months Cycle World & Sport Rider both have articles on it...AS WELL AS the new AMA magazine(if you're a member). The AMA writer had a few laps on the bike. He was very impressed at it's ridability, the new steering dampener & the powerful new dual fuel injection. Said if feels just like a 600 when flicked.

Only turn off was the riding position...seems Honda has taken the leaning approach with the new rearsets...definitely a race-ready beast...sounds like they've departed from the best middle-of-the-road rocket to a more serious racer stance.

I was seriously considering trading my 954 for it in the early Spring, but am turned off by the agressive seating position...BUT, the bike sounds nasty good.

I read the article in CW and am waiting on my SR. I may have to go buy the SR if it does not show up soon. I like the agressive position. If you have ever ridden a ZX-7R then you know what I mean - you literally sit IN the bike. I will have to go sit on both - that more than any thing is going to be the determining factor. Gotta be able to handle the positon. I always felt like I was riding real high on the R1's I have ridden. Does not feel all that good to me.

Yeah...I'm not fond of the seat height on the R1 either.

I've always been a Honda fan...maybe if I can get my girl her own bike, I'll get the new RR...we'll see.

It is not so much the seat height from the ground as teh seat height in relation to the pegs/tank/bars.

I would go w/ the honda 1000. I have riden the 954 and previous year R1's. The honda feels more stable for a smoother ride. The weight of the r1 does not feel evenly distributed which gives it an ackward and unstable feeling in the turns.
Note that either bike you get will only come in second to the gixxer 1000 j/k Seriously, you will not be disappointed with either bike you get.

The Gixxer is a great ride, but the few I have been on and I admit I have not been on the latest 1000, but there is just something which does not work for me. Could be that I just never liked the GSXR paint/graphics - and no I do not own a greeen ZX-7R - it is dark metallic red -

also, GSXR has a different image in general, than R1 or Honda. I dunno, its more of a "street" kind of image, whereas the R1 is more "race". just what I think.

Of course this is only in abstract terms, as I am very well aware that the GSXR 750 and 1000 are killer track bikes......

I think that at the level of performance these bikes provide - you really cannot go too wrong - it is going to be personal preference. I mean every year the new models come out and every year they get faster and lighter. My ZX-7R is antiquated, but having been out on it yesterday - it still runs like a raped ape when you hammer it -

1) I'm hoping that is a joke.

2) I had one of those briefly...they were hot back in 91/92...

That is a nice specimen though...looks in very good condition.

According to SR the 1000 puts out 153.5 HP and 78 Trq. The R1 should be putting out 25 more HP......

That sounds like at the wheels...R1 is probably in the same area.

Yeah, that number sounds low even at the wheels. If I had WHP on the R1, we could have a better comparison, they just keep posting 180, which I'm sure is not at the wheels.

I wonder where we could look to get the exact numbers...new CBR is still super new though...

The 'busa is a bad-ass ride, but you are nuts to get that for a first bike! It is not just the power of the bike, but that is also a heavy and big big bike or a sport bike. It would not be my choice, but hey if you get one - they make a turbo kit...........

when i went to the bike shop, they did show me the honda 1100 and the 9 and also the haybusa. Since I'm 6'4'' and about 240, they said that my weight would help out with the bike itself for being bigger...

buuut I'm would be worried about the power...thats a lot of power. I've drivin my cousins 7R before, but that is surely a big jump in bikes there

Sounds like you are big enough to handle it. I'm 6-2 180 and that bike is a moster for me to deal with - if you feel ok with the size and the weight then you just have to have some decent self control for the power - if you have ridden the 7 then you know what I mean - the 7 cruises when you open it up - the 'busa would walk away from the 7 on the open road in a heartbeat - it is all what you are comfortable with

In the magazines, the R1 seems to look much cooler - after seeing the real thing at the bike show, the CBR was the clear winner. Not that owning one (a 954) makes me biased or anything

As for horsepower, the R1 claims 180 at the crank (Yamaha always inflates the numbers). The Honda puts out 155 at the crank (rumor - no published numbers yet). Either way, most of the people who ride these bikes (myself included) can't really utilize all of the power. Generally ends up being a preference thing.

Exactly, I had gixxer 1000 and I NEVER used the bike to its full potential. Except one when I wanted to see what top speed I could hit. I bought it because I wanted the baddest bike out at the time. Now if were to do it over right now I would chose after I looked at both bikes. But I love both bikes for sure and it would be a very tough decision for sure!!

The Honda puts out 153+ at the rear wheel, suggesting 175 at the crank or so with no ram air effect. GSX-R1K puts out 152 at the rear wheel. New Kawi ZX-10 ads have it at 184 hp at the crank, with ram air; the R1 ads have it at 180 hp at the crank, with ram air, 172 hp at the crank with no ram air. Odds are both the ZX-10 and the R1 are within 2 or 3 hp of the Honda & GSXR1K when measured at the rear wheel.

(here's a dyno chart of the new honda, along with comparisons to the GSX-R: http://www.sportrider.com/features/146_0404_cbr_dyno/ )

None of this makes the decision any easier; they are all great bikes. Buy what you like.
