Holy Cow! I got SMOKED!!
Well if you look at the numbers, the Type S auto is not that far behind a Mustang GT. I raced a co-worker with a Stang yesterday and got smoked. It wasn't even funny.
I don't have that much experience with the Type S. It is mostly my garage car in the 3rd bay. I had a '88 Mustang GT back in '88 and the Acura 'feels' as strong as that car at least from what my memory has recorded.
I feel a replacement coming on. The Type S has a great interior and the exterior is sweet as well but to get beat like a drum that badly is unacceptable.
What did I do wrong? What can I try technique wise while I await the '05 Stang?

what yr GT was it?? if its 99+, then a Type-S can NOT keep up with those. those run 14.0 @~100mph in the quarters. if its the 94?-98 GTs with the 225hp v8, then you SHOULD win.

I beat a 5MT 99+ GT in a 1/2 mile sprint with my 2k2 Maxima (auto). It def seemed like he didnt quite have the shiftpoints down right 'cause I had a fender on him during the whole sprint. I'm certain a well driven 5MT can take me down but, I'm pretty confident on taking an auto.
The numbers on paper for the Stang seem to be very conservative, compared to what I've seen at the track. The Stangs could be like Nissans where the car has to be broken in (after a 1k or so) before it gets measurably quicker. $.02
Peace.

The Mustang was a 2002 GT with a manual transmission. He launched quite well.
I did not turn off the traction control on the Acura nor did I pull any revs with the brake on.
The Acrua didn't feel normal. Perhaps it was the near 100% humidity, however that would affect the stang as well.
We will try this again after my long trip this weekend. Perhaps some time on the road will blow something out of the Acura.
Thanks for the advice.

There's your problem....YOU MUST TURN VSA OFF.....or you will kill your acceleration off the line. No wonder you got beat so bad.
As a general rule: SHUT VSA OFF, put it in SS and let the computer shift 1-2 by itself...then on the 2-3 shift, shift at 7000 RPMs.
You may not beat him, but you will sure as hell give him a better run with the traction control off.

i've raced w/o turning off vsa, and didn't have to put in ss as well. Maybe your actuator is broke? I kept up w/ a 99+cobra the other day We went from a stop to 80 and i was only about 2/12 cars behind. Both got good launches and I'm sure he would have walked me hard

heh, just (kinda) raced a mustang GT earlier today with my first gen. It was a mid 90's stang, and it had a rolling start at about 15-20 mph while I was stopped at a light, so It was pretty much guaranteed the win anyways, but it actually didn't relaly pull that hard on me, and I knew he was racing becuase not many people drive 85 in a 45 :P. I slowed down before a little place where cops alwasy like to sit, but there was none, so he was long gone before I noticed that. still I was expecting the stange to pull harder than that on me, especially considering that he had a rolling start and I was completely stopped.

ugh..those new model GT's are no joke..i got burned by one twice on the freeway...the torque on those cars are ridiculous..as soon as they downshift and floor it...theyre gone man

You mention that the new GT's are no joke and have ridiculous torque, but don't forget that even though the old v8 LX's and GT's may have only had 35 less hp, they had 300lb torque, which is only 2 less than the current model GT.
Taking the VSA off would've helped in this race we're talking about, but it wouldn't have changed the result.

I love my TL, but it's weak in the torque department like the rest of you, and that's the one thing that gets you from point a to point b faster.

Stangs are DEFINITE torque monsters.

Yeah the manny GTs are no joke, especially from a dig. not to mention a few mods and forget it. autos are about even with the CLS only because of their gearing, despite their torque advantage. from a roll the CLS has a better chance but against the manny you will lose to a competent driver.
from a dig the VSA hurts you a lot!

While I agree that torque is what accelerates a vehicle and feels great; there is certainly more to this. In particular, how long you can make torque.
Using a non-specific example; Car A makes 400 lb/ft at 3000 RPM but only made 150 lb/ft at 5000 RPM. Car B which makes 200 lb/ft from 3000 - 7000 RPM will win in this hypothetical example. Why, because of gearing. Car B can use shorter gearing since it makes torque longer.
This is probably one of the better explanations:

Modded GTP's are serious shit. My buddy's '99 GTP has an LSD, chip, cam timing adjusted, and some other stuff, but nothing really major. He's running low to mid 12's easily on street tires. He pulls on Z06's on the highway.
As for GT's... If it's a manual coupe, then be prepared for an awesome race, or a good ass-kicking... same thing. If it's an auto vert, get ready to hand them their asses on a silver plate. Auto tranny in the Mustang sucks.

i think the VSA is a must to turn off...I had mine on (totally forgot about it) at the light with a Monte Carlo. WHen i slammed the gas the VSA light started flickering and I knew it...I could tell the car was adjusting...so it must be taking away something

yea i tried with one b4 , from a roll at `15 miles per hour in 1st gear gate-shifting, he pulled hald a car length on me at 85 whch isn't bad, but i was suprised how fast it was, it pulled harder then i thought

I just raced my RENTAL car Mustang GT (2004) against an '02 5AT CL-s... he had injen intake, exhaust, pullies... and I spanked him good everytime. Running down Beach Blvd close to Huntington Beach. I don't think the Auto CL-s will hang with even an auto Mustang GT... the GT has better power delivery, RWD advantage and gobs of torque over the CL...

exactly right...

this is why Mustang always get 4.10's or at least 3.73's as a first mod. It's kinda funny when people say torque vs horsepower, since HP = T*w*C, where HP = horsepower, T = torque, w = revolutions, and C is a constant. But yeah, torque gets you off the line, HP wins races (longer races anyways... hahaha)
