High Mileage AUTO Second Gens
Hey guys, I was wondering if those of you with second gens (auto tran) with 130,000 or more miles could speak up. Possible longevity pointers, tranny issues, how many you've replaced, any motor problems etc.
Thanks
Thanks

Pfft...is there any out there????
I have an 01 w/ 85K no tranny problems. I'm the 2nd owner and picked mine up in 05. Keeping my fingers crossed. I'd like to keep mine longer but closer it gets to that 100K mark the more I get scared.

'01 PDG w/152k on it. 2nd trans, 1st at about 40k I believe. I bought it with 130k on it. So far so good. I only notice when its around 55-60 a little uncertainty to wether it wants to be in 4th or 5th but was told by the dealer that was normal for the car when they did a tranny flush at about 140k. That has pretty much been the case since I owned it. Recently I did add that Rincolin (sp?) tranny stabilizer to it and have been pretty happy with the smooth shifts. I am thinking about dumping it because I probably will not need it soon but so far so good.

01 CL-S, tranny was replaced when purchased with 65K on the odometer. Now I am up to 162,500 and running strong. Changed 3 quarts of tranny fluid 3 weeks ago, only the second time changed since the 65k replacement tranny was put in and the fluid was nice and light still and no metal flakes.
I installed a tranny cooler, not sure if that helps, but with 162k on the odometer my car is still running strong.
The biggest problem I have with my car is the creaks but even with 162k it still sounds better than some american cars with 62k.

Im up to 135k miles now with no problems since I purchased it at 122K. I believe it has had one tranny replaced, although im not sure when.
The car is running fantastic and its getting good gas mileage too.

in terms of pointers, the only one ive learned so far personally is that replaceing the front motor mount makes quite a difference if yours is worn...from what i hear all CL's will have a worn one by 100,000...or at least the members here with heavy feet.

Back to a MT!
My dad has a TL-S and rolled 200k last week. He had his transmission replaced at about 50k and jetted shortly there after, so about 150k on the 2nd one. He makes sure all his interval maintenance is done on time, so as long as people don't drive with a lead foot all the time and keep up on fluid changes, should be good ok with higher mileage.

I think 100k is generous by about 50k.

Had the tranny replaced at 50K!! Shifts on a dime now, up to 82K now and love the vehicle like the first day I bought it!! I did have to replace two of my motor mounts when tranny was replaced. Dont see anything out there right now (within my price range) that will give me the same pleasure the CLS does, so until then I am just gonna keep truckin!

150k on the original transmission, any transmission, or the whole car?
#18
Almost 139k original owner on original trans and no issues with it. It was always had a stutter into 2nd gear under light throttle since new but hasnt gotten any worse since I bought it. I have replaced 3 motor mounts but I dont drive it hard at all. I only know they are broken as it vibrates more at idle and when started and shut off.
I still like the car and it runs perfect but after 8+ years, starting to get the new car itch. Tempted on an 08 TL Navi since one can be had for less than I paid for my CL-S!

'00 TL first tranny made it to 164,000, second tranny still going at 251,000 miles.
'03 CLS, bought with 75,000 miles, now 121,000 miles, same tranny as when I bought it. Don't know if it's original one or not.
Hints: change fluid often, use synthetic fluid. Both cars have a tranny cooler. If you can avoid hot summer stop and go traffic situations. I use only D4 or D5, no sport shifting and all that. Do not hold third gear, and do not downshift to 3rd on the highway, use 4th. Yeah I know its slower but trannys cost alot. if anyone disagrees with me, fine, please re-read success story above.

ha ha, I always wondered where I was with this. I'm the original owner of this 2003 CL, 153k miles...3rd transmission is a charm! The replaced the first one at 22k, the second one at like 28k (It was poorly remanufactured). All work was done at the dealership. The car has been great, though now I am starting to have to shell out money for suspension issues. Last week while getting a look over I found out about the front ball joints being worn...this week while getting rotation/balance for my wheels I find out I need new struts.

My cousin has an 01 CL-S, he got it in 03 with about 60k on it. At 90k the trans failed. He is now up to 135k. Replaced the mounts, and axles at 130k. Other than that just basic maintence.

i want a lip..
my 01 cl-s has about 143,xxx on the original tranny. still runs fine, i think it's pure bad luck whether you have a defective tranny or not. a lot of people have tranny problems, some don't, but everythings running fine on my car. had the 105k tune up done, last year, and still runs smoother than my buddy's 02 with about 75k. haha. guess im lucky.

thanks for the response and tips guys, greatly appreciated,
i agree chuck, i played around with the SS for about the first week I had the car, and learned its pretty pointless since it still changes gears for ya
