HID light color...

My friend just bought an IS300. When he turns on the HIDs, the initial light color is blue then it slowly becomes white when the HIDs warm up.

I haven't gotten my CL-S yet and too lazy to go to a dealer at night. Is it same on our CL HIDs? I love the blue light when the HIDs are cold.

All HIDs normally do that. The first few seconds are when it looks pretty...then it warms up to the regular color. 6000k upgrades ...

get some 6000k bulbs. they'll be blue, then purplish, and stay that way.

and don't believe some of the guys that say it'll reduce your vision...the light output is 10% less than stock, but without instrument testing you'd never know (and it's still way more output than halogens).

The vision is not that great on this picture compare to the HIDs on my friends IS300. His HIDs covers three lanes completely. Is it because you changed them to 6k bulbs? I thought regular HIDs should cover more area than the halogen ones.

2 things.

The light is blue on HIDs at first because the bulb is cold and it takes about 10-20 seconds to light up.

The other thing is all Lexus HIDs are auto-self leveling, so upon inital start up, if you look at the light closely, you will see the mechanism holding the bulb retract some.

Few things contribute to this...first it's the black housing. It causes some loss in ligh output....dunno entirely why tho. 6000k does put out less light output. And also the Lexus generally seem to have a brighter reflector design. And HIDs do cover much more area that halogen ones. Keep in mind this is a pic at night standing back near the driver door.

The light output is less. The manufactures only tell you so. The 6000k only put out like 2800 lumens to the 4300k 3400 lumens.

Why change for less illumination/ It's like downgrading for more$$$$$$$$$$$. Plus, 10% more light may save your ass.

if you hear or readt that the 6000k's have less output, you are right.

but if you don't have them or haven't driven with them, then you just don't know.

i have them and whatever loss is NOT noticable. The only difference you notice is the color, and they still put out way way more light than any halogens.

without a light meter or something, you'd never guess it was 10% less than stock.

that 10% will NEVER EVER be noticed to save your ass because the distance of the beam will remain exactly the same because thye have nothing to do with the distance of the beam.

That street is probably close to 4 lanes sidewalk to sidewalk. 6000K is the shit.

Damn right.

Anyone that has 6000k bulbs will agree with me that it looks cooler than stock and the 10% loss that you guys are so afraid of is just in text...

just like bimmer reviews...they may have less hp on paper, but they sure show off more.

IMO, a match to the color temp on the HIDs with 20 extra watts would be fine...

1. As in "show off" to please people interested in modified color temps ("Hey, nice purple coming off the front of that baby ... where do I get something in the UV range? Do you know where I can get an ultrasonic horn to wake up police dogs?)

2. As in "show off" to attract lots of cops that are already hassling people with 4K+ OEM HIDS.

I would be interested in what would attract more "bad attention" (AKA HEAT):

1. A really bright high-beam that matches the color temp of the low beams with a kick in wattage

OR

2. A bluish/purple set of lights -- or a set of blue replacement HIDs with a set of purple high beams

:P

BTW, a camera, that is not color corrected appropriately, can give funny renderings to light sources with a discontinuous light spectrum; it will not necessarily match the response of a human retina. A very blue could be slight blue and so on...

I guess...it's like having 18-20" chrome wheels, a 3ft spoiler, body kit, lowered 2" from the ground, strobes, dark tint, dual exhausts the size of economy size coffee cans, 20" woofers blasting rap, and altezza tailights.

but the 6000k's are a lot more subtle and tasteful.
unless you were doing a side to side comparison, you wouldn't notice much difference between stock vs. 6000k. And the difference really is subtle.

It's like going from Raybrig Hyper-white halogens to Piaa superwhites...the color is a little different but not enough to call attention to it. It's NOT like going from halogens to $9 ION blue bulbs or something cheap like that.

i've been from NJ, TX, and everywhere in between, and never got pulled over for my 6000k's. If you get pulled over for HIDs, then you'll get pulled over regardless if you have 4300k or 6000k as the cop probably won't be able to tell the difference anyway and think you have illegal halogens.

and considering the housings of BMW's and Audis make the regular HIDs more blue, 6000ks shouldn't give anyone any MORE trouble than they would if they had 4300ks.

Honestly, if you have not seen them in person, find someone who has and check them out for yourself before judging from what you read or from pics.
