Hey Soopa

I have a PIII 500 with 128mb ram and am on DSL. It seems quite often that I have a hard time accessing this board, or the pages take a very long time to load. Not sure if others are having this problem, or it's just something on my end. Either way it is frustrating and wanted to know if you had any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I'm actually on the road accessing via modem with a P166. It runs pretty quick for me. The fastest connection I have been able to obtain is 31,200 from Las Vegas thru AT&T.

Nooth, open a few command windows and run traceroute on each to different sites. That might give you an idea of where the bottleneck is. Are any other sites slow for you? How many hops is it to ACL for you? Is one hop particularily slow? I'm 12 hops away so it's not too bad for me.

While I understand what all that stuff means, I have no clue how to accomplish all of that. Other websites I go to have no problems. Do I ping the website from dos window or something?

use the following command from a dos prompt

tracert www.acura-cl.com

run it a few times through out the day. Look for any hops that show a large number (latency). 1-12 are the hops, the 3 sets of #s are echo replies which is the measurement you're looking for, the 4th field is site you're traversing.
My packets -> SD to LA to San Jose and back.

here's mine.

Yeah I was kinda wondering why Soopa didn't go with your servers Webtoker?

The site for me seems alright most of the time..never really slow slow...sometimes, rarely, it take a couple extra seconds to access a post.

I think it was a personal choice since I host www.acura-tl.com. I understand why he had to go somewhere else. My offer still stands though.

The response goes from really fast to pretty slow. It seems that the slow times are when there are tons of people on. Late at night/early AM seems very fast (now that my cable people have fixed up their servers).

Just for reference, if anyone hasn't already found this, a cool link (one of many) that will test your dsl/cable is:

www.dslreports.com/test

They have got reverse trace routes, packet loss tests, etc, etc. The also have links to other cool "what the heck is going on with the internet" sites.

HEy nootch, i acually have had some problems accessing the new cl page too. I think it was becasue i had about 4 megs of shit in my cache folder. If u go to files search and open the cache folder, delete all the junk in there and u will run alot smoother. I told snoop of the problem and he said it must be something wrong with my computer, and i run a 500amd and dls modem too. SO thats why i checked cache.

Cache is good if you have drive space. It saves things for you so you don't have to load them up everytime you goto a website.

Actually what it means is that "abovenet" blows. That is where the latency is appearing.

I also have noticed that the site is definitely not as quick as before. Its not really a problem yet but it might be something which Soopa will want to address in the future.

I would try one of those programs that optimizes your packet size depending on what type of connection you have (ie.,cable, dsl, dial-up). I have no clue what the name of it is though...that a real help.

i THOUGHT COOKIES WERE THE thing that saved info for future refrences on websites. When ever i open the cache section, it is just storage of pics and other stuff that u have either looked at or the pics onh websites that u have vivitewd, I never had a problem when i delete the cache , i did hacve a p[robelm once when i dleeted the cookies though?

Cookies store specific information about you so the site knows its you when you visit. Cache saves images and other things so the sites will load up faster. Cache can be a good thing and a bad thing if your a web developer. As for "AboveNet" blowing ass, its probably a combination of under powered routers and bad network design leading to latency.

Well here's my tracert, though it does seem slower than the TL.com CL forum, the connection is far from intolerable, even with 22 hops.
