Help w/ Oil Change

Hiya,

Well, this isn't your usual what oil/filter do I use. It's how the hell do I keep oil
off my driveway!

This time I put my car up on the ramps and when I took off the oil filter, there was a big burp and oil splashed onto the ramp, overshooting the catchpan. Then when I took off the oilpan nut, I of course underestimated the oil stream and had a nice puddle on my driveway.

This is only my 2nd oilchange on this car, so other than getting to know its characteristics, any other advise? What do you guys lay down underneath to prevent a huge mess?

Oh, and does anything short of hi-pressure wash get oil stains out of a driveway.

Thanks Much!

Smeg

I've been lucky and been able to catch most of it with my drainpan, but you can get chemical cleaners at autopart stores or Home Depot explicitly desinged to remove the grease stains from concrete. They seem to work pretty well.

get a big hunk of cardboard ( like from a fridge shipping carton ) and lay it under the car.
Or you can get a decent size drip pan, and be more careful. You'll get used to it.

Two other ideas: the metal (tin?) sheet that auto stores sell. Lay it down first, or lay cat litter (preferably unused) down in the area first, then just sweep it up after the change.

Don't forget to remove the oil fill cover before you drain your oil! This may help the initial flow of oil be more manageable.

This was an idea I never thought of, but it works great. I've been using it for years now.

Someone told me to use a plastic office chair matt. You can find about a 4'x4' matt at Sam's or any office supply store.

It's plastic so the oil just wipes off.
It's big enough to catch oil splashes when changing oil.
You can leave it in place to catch the small drips when you removed the filter. Great for old leaky cars.
And, you can run over it without messing it up.

To change oil, I use a 2.5ton jack with jack stands. That way, I can slid the matt and the drip-pan right under the oil plug and filter.

Anyway, that's how I change oil. Good Luck!!

I've been changing the oil in my cars for years but the CL-S really got me, just like Smeg... but I drained the oil first.
And to make matters worst, for course, my landlord showed up just as I was getting out from under the car with oil spilled all over the place. He is cool and I cleaned up the mess nicely.
Think I'll get a wide mouth funnel to put under the drain plug and filter next time.

hey dont give the guy a hard time. i'm a pretty big guy, 6'2" 210 lbs, i can change the oil without jacking the car up, or using ramps of any sort. of course i havent lowered it yet. you can reach everything front angling your body in from the front right side in front of the tire. simple enough???
