Help with sizing 20's

Okay, first off if you're just a jerk-off wanting to tell me not to get 20's dont bother posting. I'm not looking for opinions on why you dont like 20's.

I am doing a bunch of research to try to find a wheel that I like in a size that will fit. I have found its very difficult to locate any 20" chrome wheel that is less than 8.5" wide. I have found one that I think will look very classy and sporty without being ghetto at all. It has a +42mm offset and is 20x8.5". I know that clearance is going to be very tight, so I cant put on 245/30/20's which is what I would like to. Nitto makes 225/35/20 in their 555's, which are very decent tires and are only .7" taller than stock. The speedo will read 60mph when the car is actually going like 61.9mph, so the size is pretty damn close.

I have been racking my brain to try to figure out how to get this combo to fit 100% correctly and not spend as much in mods to get it to work as the wheels cost themself.

The only real thing I can come up with is to have the wheels narrowed. There is a local company that takes will take any wheel, cut it in half, weld a strip in the middle of the wheel and you have a wider wheel. I assume that it would be just as doable to cut the wheels in half, remove a 1/2"-1" of material and re-weld it together. This would help with the way the tire sits on the wheel and of course the offset. The only thing I'm concerned with is structural rigidity, which is something I'll have to find out from the company and people that have had their wheels widened.

Finally, the reason I'd like to do something like this is because I like to be a little different. Alot of people told me over & over not to do anything to myTaurus, that the wheels would look retarded, etc. After it was done it looked better than Icould imagine and was 100% unique. I dont want to just have another CL-S on 18's, theres no originality in that.

I just need to know what the minimum offset I could go with without getting the mexican look and what other suspension problems I might encounter. I plan on going with either H&R Sports or OE's, not sure yet, and probably Koni sports or KYB GR2's.

i dont know about offsets and what not, but i thought you were a speed guy... 20's gonna slow ya down, but if you do get them i'd go with coilovers to drop it perfect, cause w/ springs it might look funny....

get 14s if you wanna be different

Order some custom wheels through DPE or HRE if you want a 20x8.5 that would fit.

do a search, this guy has 20" but they are 7.5 wide, which is better for your needs. i say go 19', with a 35 series tire, it will look liek a twenty inch wheel, trust me.

with that offset, you will be very wide and you will get that look you do not want. something along this line would be better: 8" wide wheel with 45 or higher offset. you can still get the 8.5' but focus more on the offset. i would say 47 or slightly higher would be perfect.

you should ask this on the TL board. I know they are more into the big rim thing that acl people. i remember they posted several times about the same things you are asking about.
good luck and you better be getting deep dish or rims that dont have spokes going to the edge, cuz your rims will look huge otherwise!

The wheels I like have a very nice lip, so they wont look ungodly huge I think. I know they will hurt my 1/4 times a bit, but if I plan on going to the strip with it I'll put the stockers back on. I am a speed guy, but thats what my Mustang is for. I bought the CL-S because I wanted a bit more speed than my Taurus and a decent manual tranny. I couldnt care less if I lost 2 tenths from wheels if they look badass.

I'm definitely NOT getting coilovers. $1k for springs/struts is way more than I want to spend. I could live with the ride, even if it is decently firm.

And why is it that 19's are considered perfect, but 20's while only being VERY slightly larger are ripped and called ghetto?

I'll call the company today and see what options I have.

be sure to upgrade the brakes... the stock brakes are weak as fuck to begin with... the extra weight from the rims will warp them quicker than normal breaking.

I plan on it. No crazy Brembo's or anything, but some SS lines, and better pads/rotors would probably be sufficient.

First off, what's your budget? If you've got the balls to do this, come up with the cash and you can have custom HREs made to 20x8 with a nice lip and the proper offset.

Biggest problem is gonna be tires. The lack of a sidewall is gonna wreak havoc on those wheels. Look at the pictures below. That guy is running on rubberbands.

I can't believe that a wheel that's been welded would have a lot of structural rigity. Think about where they cut, right down the middle, pretty much where the majority of the stress will be. Think about a piece of wood. If you rip it down the middle, then glue it back together, then put weight on the center of it, what happens? It bows and eventually splits.

Do what you want, I just think you are asking for a fatal wreck if one of your wheels decides to crack. Hell we're all jerk-offs anyway, right. :sqntfawk: :pfawk:

I have no desire to drop $5k in wheels. The resizing would be an absolute last resort, and I would only do it if it was 110% safe.

So u want 20s and a lip on your CL? 20s are really for big body cars or SUVs. 20s shouldn't be slapped just because they fit. It looks forced and like a rookie.
19s on a CL with a drop are very tasteful (well depends on the rims) and speaks class and elegance. 20s scream wannabe.

um...cutting the rim in half and rewelding it isnt gonna make it fit any better....the outer edge of the rim is gonna be in the same place it was before you cut it....

your going to have serious problems trying to balance the wheels after that, any slight angle or misalignment will throw everything off, especially at higher speeds. if you really want 20's, just call a custom wheel manufacterer, like HRE, or GfG, or iforged wheels, they make the wheels one at a time and they custom drill, the specs like offset and centerbore and make the outer rim to the width you need. iforged seems to have the custom thing down pat. try forged wheels.com plus they are lighter than stock and stronger. you'll prolly need 30series rubber.

To be honest I hadnt even thought about the balancing issue, thats a very good point. I think I am going to wait till I find the perfect offset & size if I do anything. 18's or 19's are still a possibility, but I wanna see if I can find some 20's that fit & look good.

What about a 20x7.5 with a +45 offset & 225/35 Nitto's? With a mild drop would it fit without lots of problems? What is the screename of the person above with the 7 spoke 20's?
