Help... DIY - Heavy Duty Trunk Springs

I installed an aftermarket spoiler and now i'm installing the Heavy Duty springs to pop the trunk open. Installed the Heavy Duty ones just like the factory install. They don't pop the trunk open any further than the original??? Here are some before and after pics.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I got them with the spoiler as a package deal. I think i paid dealer invoice cost which is around $40.00. I'm not sure what the dealer markup is though.

Did you put them on the higher perch setting(the ones closest to the front of the car).

You sure these are the correct ones that are for cars with a spolier? Not just the standard factory ones? Maybe the aftermarket spolier is heavier then the factory one?

Yeah, both settings and the same thing, just a little pop, about 2 inches.

I really can't tell the difference. There are no part #'s that i can see. The color is black and my stock are silver. They don't look any thicker so I'm not sure if these are the right ones. I can't imagine the aftermarket spoiler being that much heavier so i guess i'm leaning towards the wrong set of springs.

What visual thing would tell me these are heavy duty compared to the stock springs?

CL trunks are very weird. my 03 and my friends 03 both don't open when you hit the trunk pop, like you hear them pop but thats it. they dont actually open themselves. they barely move.

Yet my friend randy's 01 .. when he hits the popper, the trunk fully opens itself all the way up.

I am about to dynamat my trunk lid so it probably won't open at all lol .. so if you get these springs working let me know.

I have noticed this same thing with my '03. My '01 would open up almost all the way when poped. You barely notice the trunk is open on my '03.

I never had a problem before i installed the spoiler with the trunk popping up. Did your CL come with a factory spoiler installed?

What’s interesting is if I line these torsion bars up, they look identical in dimensions and shape. I don’t understand how these can be heavy duty if they look identical. What’s even more interesting is all of the TL folks that were part of this “group buy” have these torsion bars installed and theirs are working!!

Are the bars for a TL the same for the CL?
My 03 with the spolier dealer installed pops open about 4-5 inches. The 02 I had that also had a spolier never opened more then 1-2".

Now that I think about it, these must be the “heavy duty” torsion bars. With the stock torsion bars and the spoiler installed, the trunk popped, but left no gap. When I tried to open the trunk half way, it would slam back down.

With the new “heavy duty” torsion bars installed, I get about 2” inches of gap when I hit the button. When I lift the trunk up half way, it stays open. If I lift a little higher, it automatically opens fully.

I guess I was just looking for the trunk to open fully with the “heavy duty” torsion bars but it might not be designed to do this.

I asked my Acura dealer if they had any extra spoiler tension bars lying around but none were available. They also wouldn't split up a spoiler kit that comes with it (understandable). No place to buy one online?

My '01 had a spoiler installed when I bought it. There was such a drastic difference on the '03 vs '01, that I had the dealer check the trunk springs to see if the correct ones were installed. I was told, yes. To this day I cannot say what the visible difference is.

I had an after market spoiler installed and my trunk would not pop up, so I got Acura to install a new tension bar and my trunk opens about a foot+. All I can say is the tech told me that it takes for ever to replace. I watched for about an hour. He had to go completely in the trunk.

Then he didn't know what he was doing. The tech that did mine on my 02 I had was done in 15 minutes.

It took me about an hour total but for this reason. I installed and uninstalled them a few times to see the difference. As for the tech's at Acura, once you do one, there's no excuse for any time charged over 15 minutes. It must be the standard 1 hr minimum time block for service!

Dind't pay

well I didn' t for it, so I did not mind!! I guess I should have added that. So 15 minutes versus hours is nothing when it's free.

Sorry Stejus I'm just seeing your thread right now.. the best way to tell if the heavier duty trunk springs are installed propersly is to test its resistance. When you add the spioler and when its on its stock torsion bars.. the trunk will come slamming down when lifted and let go. But with the heavier duty torsion bars.. if you do this.. the trunk wont close, it will just go down half way and bounce back up a little... there will be resistance to closing the trunk.
