Headlights Too Bright?

My wife just picked up a new CL-S 2001 and when driving the vehicle at night there are a lot of oncoming cars blinking their headlights at us as if we have our high beam headlights on.

I looked at the lights on a dark road and they seemed to be aimed very high. In addition, I noticed that all four of her front headlights were on when the lights were in the low beam position. Should all four lamps be on or should only the two outer lamps be on when using only the low beam lights?
I think we are going to have the dealer look into this but I'm afraid they are going to tell us that the lights are bright because they are high intensity lamps.

You'll get alot more responses if you post this in the car talk section because that is mostly 2nd generation CLs (yours)and this is the 1st generation ones without the hids. Did you just try to flip on your high beams and see if any other lights come on? If they do then you know that the highs arent always on. Also you should only have a white with a slight blue/purple tint light when the lows are on and no yellowish looking light (well besides the yellowish road lamps below the headlights)>

He's right you know People aren't really used to HID lights yet...strangely even though there are so many cars out there with them. Yeah, take it to the dealer and make sure all the lights are lined up right...

Are you sure the early CL-S's didn't have HIDs? I think they always did. The early TLs didn't have HID but the CLs did.

This topic was originally posted in the 1St Gen Forum and was moved here so i meant that the '97-99s didnt have HIDs. Yeah the 2nd generation has always had them.

Only 2 of the 4 lights should be on.
Maybe your interior highbeam indicator is not working right?

Even though I have the HID's, I am still not used to seeing other approaching cars with them. They are very bright!! But no more annoying than those monster SUV's on the road. I like the auto-dimming rear view mirror!

Haha I like to see cars equipped with HIDs even though it is kind of too bright because most cars have HIDs are new cars and I like to see new cars.

The 4 lights look like all 4 are on due to the refracters that are in them. Only 2 lights are on though. Trick look at them from the side not head on and you will see only the 1 light is on.

same here...i think the hid's on the s2000 are bad ass. the projection hid gives it a more agressive hue. they should make ours like that.

I don't understand people on the road that flash their highbeams at you. How can people think the Xenons are high beams? I just don't understand it. The kind of light they produce is so much different. I just don't understand how people can mistake them for highbeams just because they are bright. I love it when someone does this to me. I just flip on my highbeams right back at them. You gotta love how the Xenons, high beams and road lamps all stay on when you have the high beams on!!! It must be a wall of light.

I wassitting in the median to make a turn on a four lane road and a guy flashed as he came up to me. I had plenty of time to casually reach down and blast him with every photon available from my Solaris high beams just to show him that they weren't on. I could see that every last bit of the high beam light stung him right in the eyes!

You guys are taking this discussion off-topic and no one has answered his question yet. This guy is obviously confused so to answer all the questions:
Yes, people will flash your low beam Xenon lights because they are not used to them. Also, you state you are driving with high beams, which I am sure is an error, because high beams will always get a flash. You probably mis-spoken.
The high beams are not Xenon lights, only low beams.
By all four lights, you dont mean that High and low beams are activated when the switch is set to low, correct? You probably mean the road lamps are on, which is normal, they will always be on by design. The road lamps are the supposed fog lights wanna bes in the lower bumber, however they are very weak and there only for the look. They can not be turned off.
Dont bother with the dealer unless you really believe that your lights point too high, which is very unlikely. Hope this helps.

Hey are you Susan or is that your wife? No big deal... just wondering who is asking the question.

To trouble shoot the problem, face the car at a wall. Turn your lights on, try to put the highbeams on. If they get brighter your fine, if they get dimmer, your switch is bad take it to the dealer. You should be able to tell if the highbeams are coming on and what position your light switch is in.
