a headlight is out!!!

Hey you guys. My drivers side head light is out (low beam) what up with that? Its not the bulb either ... I switched the bulbs and it doesn't work only on the drivers side. I took out the drivers side bulb and it works in the passenger side headlight but the passengers side bulb that was working doesnt work in the drivers side headlight only. Any body else have or had this problem? Know how to fix it? Thanks. Bryan.

I hope your car under warranty. if so, bring it to dealer. if not, new casing maybe .... I had a humidity problem in my headlight. too much water condensation would come through the plastic. My car is still under warranty so they changed the whole casing for 0$

OUCH....high chances of this being the HID invertor unit which is what creates the power for the bulb. it's pretty common on TL's and somewhat common on CL's. If u have a good relationship w/ ur dealer than see if they can goodwill warranty this for u. That is if it's not something like a fuse

Ouch is right. That inverter unit is $500. and there's one for each side. I will see what they will do about the warranty. where the hell is that inverter any way?

btw... I checked the fuses and they're both ok. And I don't have a moisture problem in the assembly.

i believe the inverter (more commonly known as a ballast) converts the DC power input to an AC output. If you buy the unit from the dealer, you are going to get ripped off. I recommend checking eBay or going to a junkyard to find the part.

check this shit out:

Our service manual is confusing. It says HID inverter but doesnt show a picture or label anything as the inverter. I think the inverter is the same thing as what the manual labels as the HID unit and its on the underside of each headlight housing. Is this correct guys?

U r the shit for finding those units on ebay Corey. Thanks a lot. that gives me hope. One HID bulb alone costs $130+ at the dealer. yes i've done some research today. I need this shit fixed ASAP. Can't be rollin' around in a Popeye car in L.A. man. Specially where I hang out.

You are looking at a 2003 CLS headlight assembly

Item #13 = INVERTER UNIT = $322.57

What sucks is that chances are only the ballast is broken and NOT the igniter. Too bad the CL gets a different deal than the TL.

On a TL the igniter & ballast can be bought seperately.

Item #10 = IGNITER = $162.07
Item #07 = CONTROL UNIT ASSY. = $178.06
Or for a better deal get both for...
Item #04 = INVERTER UNIT = $295.30

headlight must be removed to change the invertor because it mounts on the underside of the headlight. To remove the headlight u must remove the front bumper. The dealer isn't ripping u off...those things are just expensive parts. but yes check a junkyard first. Also check ur headlight relays too...they are right next to the fuses. Just swap the left and the right and see what happens. it's rare for the relay to be bad but I have seen it happen/

Good luck man. I wonder what one may find in the way of HID parts in the junkyards, especially since the HID theft is on the rise, ans is know people want these parts.

No, a ballast cannot be repaired. Buy a new one at www.hid-online.com or eBay.

Yep... I found a set of replacements but I'm just trying to get around spending a lot of $ if I don't need to.

I put in the AEM V2 CAI instead of the icebox but my headlights were working just fine for like 9 months after I installed the cold air intake.

Shadzilla,

I know this thread is old but if you are still around, could you give me a desc of where the ground wire is? I don't have the helms and I am hoping that the person who had the car previous to me did a botched job pulling the CAI before selling.

Any information would be great.

Thanks

Replace the ballast. Tons of them on ebay, just search "Ballast".

You could simply splice the new ballast into your stock harness. Any ballast will do, could be from a G35 or a BMW, it's all the same. Make sure it's an OEM ballast though.

PM me if you need help.
