Heading to the track

Ok guys, I'm making the drive to the track tomorrow night to see what my 01 CL-S can do. Now I have some questions before I go.

1. What pressure should I let my tires out to before I run?

2. I haven't practiced launching much, but what kind of traction should I expect to get on the track (is the track at all stickier than the street)?

3. My friend from work is going as well with his 2000 Z28 auto stock. We'll be running head to head as much as possible. His tires are really work down and i dont think he drives as well as he probably thinks. What would you expect him to run?

4. I just put on my AEM CAI last week, and thats the only mod i have. What should I realistically expect to run. Keep in mind that this is South Florida and temp will be around 78 with high humidity i'm guessing.

Any advice you all have will be appreciated, I just want to know as much as possible before doing this. Thanks.

Matt

Ok here ya go: Get there low on gas. Have 93 octane in there if you can. Remove trunk mat (14lbs!) and spare (30lbs) and any other heavy stuff. Front tire pressure 20, rear 35 or 40. Turn off VSA, A/C system and radio, all windows up and sunroof closed, mirrors folded in. Pull up to the line slowly and as soon as the staging light blinks on, stop. Shift into D3. When the tree starts down leave on green and don't worry about leaving in a hurry as reaction time does NOT effect elapsed time. Instead for now concentrate on power braking to 1500 rpms and nail it when you see green. If you spin only alittle, good. If you spin alot go around again and power brake less (lower RPMs) OR leave by pushing down aliitle more slowly to get the tires to grab. When spinning the clock is running but you aren't going anywhere. Leave your foot all the way down until the end and steer straight down the track. When in the staging lanes you can open the hood to cool things off, as a cool intake manifold is good. Synthetic oil might help too. All these details are a pain and some will say alittle annal but a 14.7 run feels alot better than a 15.01! Let us know how you do.

on stock tires it'll be tuff..20 p.s.i. on the fronts is good and lower if needed the track is better in traction than the street to an extent...for initial grip alot better but if you brake them loose theyll spin longer and harder...it's a fine line...where are you going? bradenton? must be thurs day T&T...anyway loose the jack and spare and go there on E ...I've run out of gas there more than once....you might put 1 gallon of 100 octane unleaded in ...the main reason for being on E isnt so much the weight ,it's where the weight is....as you go the weight shifts toward the rear decreasing traction on the front wheel driving the car...not good...too much fuel exagerates this and prolongs it....i would expect high 14's if you can pull off a 2.1 60' you'll have something to be proud of...believe me there are alot of lessons to be learned at the track some harder than others...one of which is, traction over WOT will win ...and another is leaving on yellow is ok...it'll be hard to convince your self if you've not run at the track before that leaving on yellow is OK, but you have to, if you want a chance at beating a car next to you ,that's as fast or faster or even slower for that matter....have fun...your friend should beat you every time...but see if you can keep it close for the first half and that alone i victory...good luck

I can see puting 100 octane in our cars having no good effect.

oh really well i can see that our high compression 10.5:1 engine with advanced knock control getting pre ignition due to high head tempratures during high temp, high humidty conditions find 100 octane to be quite beneficial.but that's just me...a rescent article in sport compact got 5 ho out of a Z when ading 100 oct.

How accurate was the dyno, was it a different day they dyno'd.........too many factors could be involved in the 5hp increase. I use to have a GTS with 11.5:1 ratio and it didn't help my car, this topic was brought up many times on the celica board.

i would b careful on tire pressure on FL tracks...since it's warm/hot all year, the track will b hot...if u put yer pressure down too low, u'll have too much grip, and u'll hop...if it's like above 70, i'd run the pressure higher to around 35 and go from there...if u still get hop (symptoms r sounds like there's a big BANG on the car that shakes yer bones!!), put more pressure in...if yer spinning tires a lot, u may wanna lower pressure a little

Damnit

Damn! Didn't get to the track because the lure of spring breakers on Fort Myers Beach was just too much. Had to hit the strip. Not really though. I would have much rather gone to the track, but my buddy that was supposed to go got called in to valet where we work and wanted me to wait for another thursday when we could do it. So, I'll let you know when it happens. It will be soon though. I would like to catch one more cold front, though they stopped making it south of tampa about a month ago. Maybe I'll get lucky.
