Headers! Wait or Comptech? >

Should I wait to see what comes out or just go with the Comptechs? Why?

comptech, because your gonna be waiting along time for others, and they won't be much cheaper and the quality won't be as good.

rwwlaw,

I would wait. The headers from Comptech are very good, but for the price, I think you will come out ahead if you wait for others to join the game.

Look at DC Sports. They were one of the first company to come out with Headers for the import market, and at the time, a 4 cyl Headers cost ~ $500 in stailess steel version. 1-2 yrs later more company joined in and the cost of the DC sports Headers came down to 350-400 for the stainless steel versions.

Good things come to those who wait.

but you still have to look at this/ sure they became cheaper, but also; look at how many company's make headers now. THis kind of backing will never occur w/ out cars. Another thing you have to think of is 4 bangers have a header; we have headers thus alone doubles the price so we are still looking at 800$ and then add another 99$ just cause they can. Me personally i'd rather spend the extra 100-200$ and get the comptechs now. It's not like their resale value is gonna change, i've seen a few sets of used ones go on ebay for a good 850+

Well CLpower, you can't really look at it as just because we have two more cylinders that our headers necessarily *have* to cost more. It's all a matter of units sold and amount of competition. V6 headers cost more because they're more complicated to make *and* because they sell a lot less than the four cylinder versions. As I've mentioned, you can buy headers for a Mustang (a V8) for a flat $200. It's because there's so much competition and so many units are sold. If everybody keeps buying Comptech, there'll never be any competition. Okay, I'll shut up now...

well actually, you do have to look at it because we have more cylinders too. Sure domestic headers are cheaper, but domestic 4 banger headers sell for like 129$. You do have to consider the fact that we have 2 exhaust manifolds over the one. Sorry but you gotta. I hear your facts, but all domestic parts are cheaper. A dual flowmaster exhaust system for a camaro is still cheaper then most civic single pipes made by tuners

Then it boils down to a 290HP Comptech screamer now or an unknown quantity later...

You're right... I've got to get out of this domestic car thinking now that I've got the CL-S. I've had my Mustang for going on 12 years now so it's going to be tough!!

It's a waiting game and how long you want to or you can wait. There will always be something better always coming out, but it a matter how long you can wait.

My recommendation is to wait. There is no reason to have to pay what Comptech charges for the headers for our car. They are definitely a quality piece but their engineers are not the only good engineers in town, and other companies have been doing research in this area longer than Comptech.
I paid $350.00 for a set of quality stainless DC headers for a '93 Civic I had a while back. Double that, and it's $400.00 less than the Comptechs.
I will keep waiting until prices get reasonable.

By the way this is Comptechs response as to why they raised the price on the headers...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Mike B at Comptech on Monday, April 16, 2001 - 10:02 am:
The price of stainless steel has been increasing and electricity has doubled in price (thanks PG&E) so we have had no choice. Actually, all of our exhaust prices are going up.

hey guys i agree with CLPOWER, the headers are very expensive but don't forget we get 30hp to the wheels, i got them and it was night and day difference. like clpower said say another company can out with the headers and they were 800 dollars and you got them and only got like 15hp how pissed would you be then? anyway the bottom line is just get the comptech headers there worth it. o yea haven't you guys heard the old saying you get what you pay for????????

If you look at the quality of their welds (they are laser-welded) compared to those of you with DC headers for a Civic...you'll notice the difference in quality...DCs have an annoying tendency to crack too. Look at every other company that makes headers for a v6, they all charge about 1000. That is market rate and with the more upscale nature of our cars...(compared to regular Hondas)...the price is not going to drop. Simple economics...SUPPLY and DEMAND....

I mentioned Comptech's price increase (specifically, the increase in steel price) when I spoke to the co-owner of WarpSpeed a couple days ago and he laughed. He said they just made a large purchase for their own headers and said there was no price increase from his suppliers. The cost increase in electricity probably is real but that's temporary. Let's see if they drop the price back once electricity prices normalize.

How would you feel if the upcoming WarpSpeed headers pull 35 hp and they only cost $800? The guy said their headers will of be a different design than Comptech’s and that it will offer more HP (but what do you expect him to say?). Truth is, everything is hypothetical until competition is actually released and fully tested…

He said they were "weeks" away (I inferred 1.5 - 2 months). We know from AEM what that may mean but it's a family operated business and he sounded very conscientious. They've got a lot of other products they're working on but they are making progress on the V6 headers he said. He also said they’d have pictures of the headers on their web site in a couple weeks.

great thanks!

I am not opposed at all to alternatives to Comptech. I know, I know that some of you will put nothing other than Comptech products on your cars, but hey, I am all for competition in the aftermarket!
