Header Installation Cost

Before you all jump on me with the "search card", I already did. Only thing I found was a thread from 2001.

Both places I've gone to today said it would be around 300 bucks to install my headers. That sounds pretty steep to me. What did most of you pay that had a shop that installed them?

Anyone in Arizona (Tempe/Scottsdale Area) have any good places to recommend?

Also, the box that they came in says Accord 3.0 (xs headers)
Should I be concerned or are the 3.0 and 3.2 the same?

if you have time on your hands, install them yourself. it's not a hard task at all. save you 300 bucks for sure though...

Anything under $250 is normal. But prices depend a lot on where you live. If the shop uses "book hours"(what a computer tells them how long it should take) they will charge more. Shops that just have an standard hourly rate & go by that will be less.

just do them urself.. all u neeed is 2 good friends with Half wit car knowledge.. a jack and 2 jack stands and a set of good normal tools....

a airgun and compressor works too... u can rent almost everything from autozone if u need to and u get ur money back from renting...

it will take a average joe with a good set of instructions a good 6-7 hours and 12 pack of heineken.

The standard rate is 4-5hrs @ $70-$90/hr, so $300 isn't completely outrageous. But like others said, doing them yourself isn't hard and will save you $$.

Unless you really want to DIY, I do not recommend you do it. Pay a shop for the hassle. There are a ton of variables.
Will the cat bolts come off?
Will you need to cut nuts/bolts?
Will you need a torch?
Is the car lowered? It's a bitch to get a jack under there & then high enough to get jack stands under a lowered car.
Will the headers fit right?
Can you be without your car for a few days if the install goes all wrong?
DIY install for headers has been spotty. Depends on your ability, your tools, & your car. Some are cake some are a nightmare.

I live in Mesa on the Tempe/Scottsdale line. I ended up going to Vivid Racing in Chandler. Very nice facilities but they charged me $340 for installation. They go by a book and no matter how long it takes them they're going to charge you by what the manual says. They are a speed shop too so their rates are a little high.

I had an exhaust put on by Meinekee on Scottsdale Rd near the intersection of Thomas. They did a good job and the guy cut me a deal, so maybe try there?

My brother and I did mine last weekend. We're both pretty mechanically inclined and he had air tools and a simple torch (we needed both) Even after soaking the cat bolts with penetrating fluid we could not get them off even with an air impact. Heated those puppies up with a little propane torch for about 30 seconds and they popped right off. Whole job took about 2.5 hours. Use the instructions from Comptech's website. They are spot on and easy to follow. Really not that difficult but I would say any decent garage should charge about 2 bills to do this. I had one garage quote me $300 and that's when I decided to do it myself. Glad I did now.

Their site is currently under constuction but the URL is

Yep, those cat bolts are the hardest part. I don't have air tools or a torch, so after about ten minutes under the car with an extension handle and all my might, they wouldn't budge, so that's why I had to get them installed by a shop. It was kind of an ego bust since I've installed all my previous headers and exhaust systems. It also sucks not having a garage. My condo complex is anti working on cars under the carports.

I did it my self without help and it took me all weekend. My shitty jack wouldnt even get the tires off the ground. One nut on the cat wouldnt come loose so i unbolted the whole exhaust threw it in the back of my friends car and took it to a shop so they could heat the bolt up. Besides it taking forever im glad i did it my self.

I'll check on Meinekee, that's just a couple blocks up the road from me.

If something did go wrong while I was installing myself, I'd be fucked cause I need that car and can't afford to have it not running for a day.

All the comments have been helpful.

$80 for headers. $100 to install my Rotora rotors and pads. $20 to custom modify and install a Weapon R intake.

Acura Factory tech tech doing work on the side, got to love it.

I haven't payed for my tires on my Prelude in 3 years, I take the ones that come off of RSX's that only had 4/32nd of an inch of tread that can't pass Acura's Certification.

$240 @ $110 an hour...Fall-Line Motorsports of Northbrook Illinois...my CL was by far the shittiest car they ever saw: they concentrate on Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, Corvettes etc...they are a professional racing team, so yes $300 is a bit high, but indeed worth it!! b/c they are hard to install unless you have a couple days...

$300? What? Any decent shop with a lift and good power tools should only take an hour or less. Paid $80 or $100 for mine (forgot what the labor rate was). I was going to do it myself but the 3 cat bolts were rusted solid and had to be torched.

i found that removing the rear manifold was the hardest part. The cat nuts/bolts came right off for me, especially since i soaked them in PB blaster for about a week. I had a tough time reaching the rear manifold.

Clearly that is the exception and not the rule. The cheapest I've ever seen a shop around here charge is $65/hr and typically quote 2-3 hours.

Header install isn't as easy as most people say it is. Hardest part is the rear. Me and my friend knocked it out in 50min flat but we're mechanically inclined

I worked the top headers while he busted everything loose down low. We made quite the team lol.

Not to mention its my 3rd header install, first time toke me around 4 hours but that was by myself.

Clearly if it is your 3rd install you can do it much faster.

But the average person with the right tools working leisurely should be able to complete the install in 3 hours.

When doing headers for my first time on my TL-S I went to the local muffler shop and they said like 400 dollars. I wanted those headers on so bad I did the install at night with a giant LED drop light. Funny thing is the guy who sold me the headers didnt include the 3 gaskets for the collectors and cat. Next morning I bought RTV and had to re-do it.

did u guyz who installed it yourself take the rear manifold out from the top or bottom??? I spent like 30 minutes trying to take it out from the top like a retard and i couldnt reach it, until i realized that going from the bottom was much easier.
