Header Install prices in MI and billable hours

I have gone to 3 local shops to quote my header install.

One wants 3-4 hours labor at 95.00/hr

the second a flat rate of 225...says it will take all day

the third 3-4 hours at 80.00 / hr

These people are in Farmington hills, Livonia nd Novi

From HIGHER END SHOPS ONLY

What has been commonly paid and how many hours for a HIGHER END PROFESSIONAL to bill for

They say it will take 4 hours, but only really takes about 2. When I got mine installed, they said it would take all day. I ended up getting my car back around 2 in the afternoon and that was with a 30k mile service.

I did it myself and I would be glad to give you a hand.

But as far as prices go, I would go with the 225 flat rate. If they run into a problem, it really could take all day and if you paid per hour, you would get raped.

By the way, what shops did you call? Have you called Godspeed in Novi? Mike is the mechanic there and he knows his shit and is really cool. I would highly recommend Godspeed. Good luck.

Hey,

can you tell me who did yours? I'm planning on gettin a header soon.

Do you live close to Livonia? I'm from Illinois. Was that price just for you or will they charge everyone $160?

Amoo -- You sure you just want one header? That wouldn't do much for ya.

Just fucking with you. If you ever feel like driving up to Lansing, let me know. I would be glad to help you with the installation. I finished mine in a few hours; actually a total of 8 hours, but we were fucking around throwing the old exhaust manifolds at each other, eating pizza and having food fights in the midst of it. Actual labor time was like 3-4 hours without air tools. It was a pain, but I like working on cars.

Was the engine out of the car at the time? It would've been soooo much easier on the rear header if the engine were out of the car.

I don't care that they mounted the engine tranversely. What pisses me off is the angle they put it in at. The rear one sits too low and deep and you have to do nearly everything by feel and touch.

I did the headers in the car, its fairly EZ to do with the strut tower brace out of the way. you only have 3 or 4 12mm screws that hold the exhaust manifold shields on, then remove the Ypipe off the cat, remove the 02 sensor with a 22mm open end wrench, remove the 3 14mm bolts from each exhaust manifold flange. Then remove the 2 12mm bolts that hold the Ypipe hanger to the frame of the car and just remove the Ypipe off. Now from the top of the car get the 12mm nuts off the exhaust manifold studs in the head- there should be 6 on each manifold if I remember correctly. With Air tools it takes 30 min to do in a car. I already had the stock manifolds on the engine after repleacing the heads and the block- 4 cracked pistons and 4 bent rods due to not chaning the oil. Installing the manifolds on a engine outside the car takes like 1 min to do with an air impact, then double checking the torque with a TQ wrench.

It is one header!

People keep calling them "headers" It's ONE header, not one headers. Comptech sell headers, which is plural.

Everyone, please stop calling it headers

Actually, in 4 cylinder engines there's only 1 header. But on v6 engines there's usually 2 headers. If you look at the pictures of the Comptech headers for the CL/TL, there are two. 3 pipes for each header. So, in our case, we're buying Comptech Headers. 2 of them.

Check the TL/CL instructions ...

http://www.comptechusa.com/instructions/ins028.pdf

It even says, in step number 10, "Tighten headers: With the A-Pipe tightened to both headers..."

I'll do TL or CL headers for 175 bux for anyone in Chicagoland area. I guarantee my work, I won't guarantee the parts. PM me for a quote on other installs, I can do virtually anything on any car. I don't work on Cadillacs - got burned one time on a Northstar waterpump :P So lemme rephrase that, I do work on German, Korean, Japanesse and some domestic cars.

There's "usually" 2 headers on V6 engines?

Just giving you a hard time, Liq.

... When I was writing it, it originally said that there's usually 2 headers on 6 cylinder engines ... and then I realized I'm not sure if a straight 6 would have 2 headers or not so I changed it to v6. But hey, I'm not going to rule out that there's never been a 1 piece header made in all of existence that works on a v6 either.

That would be an interesting thing to see -- one header design on a V6.
