Great MPG on 03CLS
Just made a trip from Pittsburgh to Philly with 31.8 mpg---better than my best on the 01 CLS and with good speed as well (avg. 71 mph). Only car I've had that's this good on a trip was my 82 Honda Civic and it werent near as fast....

I just picked up a new 03 cls6speeder with navi in Columbus, Ohio in anthricite (see the post "dfreder370s new ride posted yesterday), and I am puzzled.
My "old" 03 cls6speeder was hard pressed to go over 300 miles without the fuel light coming on, and my best was about 29.1.
Leaving near cincy, I fueled up and headed for Chicago. I tried to maintain 80, but hit and maintained 90 when possible. The air conditioning was on 75% of the time. When I fueled again near chicago, I had driven 320 miles and I STILL had a quarter tank of fuel! This is unheard of on a new car. But...I welcome it!

That's great mileage, but isn't it bad for a new engine to be run at high speeds and constant speeds? I would avoid that.
My mileage is not very good, but it's very hot here (mid 90's) and AC on all the time. My oil was really black when I changed it today at 7700 miles, maybe that is why? It was changed at 3500 miles too. I'll have to see if mileage improves.

Yep, these Hondas can get great mileage under the right conditions. My best so far is 32.8mpg on a trip back from Arizona. I think that is awesome for such a 'high-performance' car. Hell my Accord (low-performance) can barely beat that, although it did get 37.5 once. I average 27.6mpg in the CL btw...

I just cleaned my K&N at 20k miles and saw my mileage shoot up on mostly highway driving. I was getting 250 miles between refuelings, now I'm getting 300+ miles.
I drive on 495 both ways almost every day and the segment of the beltway I drive through (alexandria to reston) is under heavy construction so there's tons of shit in the air.
It's pretty impressive the difference a clean air filter will make. I'm sure CAI's get even better mileage.
edit: BTW, I'm using 5W-30 Mobil1, not the 5W-20 the manual says on the 03

123456speed: Wanna know how we break in new airplane engines? And a 100 horsepower continental or lycoming cost A LOT more than our entire car? 100% FULL THROTTLE is advised for the first 25 hours! It helps seat the rings
Of course, this is not possible. We can not go 25 hours before running out of fuel, in about six hours, and after three hours, usually your kidneys are giving you very clear signals.
Engine break in has changed from 10 or twenty years ago. I asked the dealer about the break in, and I was told "drive the engine any way you want, but take it easy on the brakes for 600 miles."
When my dad got his first new car, a 35 chevrolet, he was told "in the first 1,000 miles, if you drive the car for a long time and the engine siezes, just wait, and let it cool down. But, that is good. It means you have a tight engine that won't burn oil."
I told you...we have come a long way.

I'm pretty impressed with the powerful 6 banger 6 sp. I tend to be pretty easy (ocassional vtec here and there) and I'm averaging the following (70% h/w at 70-75mph) and 30% back road).
Date/ Miles/ Gallons/ MPG
5/02/03/ 316.1/ 11.455/ 27.6
5/09/03/ 314.6/ 12.431/ 25.3 (too much vtec range )
5/16/03/ 360.6/ 13.818/ 26.1
5/23/03/ 376.0/ 14.612/ 25.7 (too much vtec range )
5/29/03/ 430.8/ 15.800/ 27.3
6/12/03/ 271.2/ 09.880/ 27.4
6/20/03/ 315.4/ 11.395/ 27.7
6/27/03/ 403.1/ 14.605/ 27.6
I suppose if I was real heavy on that back road (constant vtec) I'd see that mileage around 25 mpg.

Youse guys are gonna call me a liar, but when I had my RSX-S two cars back, I did a 300 mile round trip, expressway driving, but did have to stop for some toll booths. No A/C used.
43.48 mpg!
Keep in mind all this gas mileage talk is useless crap unless you do the following. You must fuel the car at not only the same gas station that you originally filled it up, but it also must be at the same pump and pointing the same way with the same load. And you need to fuel it up the same way, i.e. auto shutoff on the pump on high flow each time or low flow.
Filling at station A and Refilling at station B really means "I got 28 mpg, + or - 3 mpg.
