Got snagged by a smokie...
Coming home from VA beach tonight. After going 80 all the way home on 95 I got hit for doing a tad over 70 on I66.
Anyone know what a (P) means next to the actual speed/posted speed... I think it indicates what he used to judge my speed but im not sure what P is?

Pace ???
Maybe he "paced" you from behind.

The P is next to YOUR speed?
If it was next to the Posted speed it would make sense.
My guess is "Paced" meaning he paced you and that's the speed his speedo read when he was pacing you.
edit- damn, beaten to it.

If you were paced, you might stand a chance in court if you decide to contest it. Was it a State Police cruiser? If so, forget about it....

Rule of thumb in VA
NEVER SPEED ON 66.
DRAG RACE ON 495 and 395.
got busted on 66 too.
The 'p' probably means pace.

The more I think about it the more I think the P must be for Posted Speed. He wrote it up just like this in the comments section:
Speeding 73/55 (p)
Thats it. There really is no way he could have paced me because I was behind him all the way going about 65. Then he took an exit off of 66west (the fairfax county parkway exit for any of you locals) so I speed up a little to match up with traffic the next thing I know I hear my passenger say "Hey why did that cop just take that exit and then get right back on" The cop actually was slightly infront of me again when he came off the entrance and he had to slow down big time to get behind me and pull me over. It was all very strange. Honestly I think he singled me out because he saw my headlights were Xenon.
I wonder how accurate the radar can be if you are not only going forward but also merging twoards the person whos speed you are measuring.
Also, anyone know whats up with Virginia speeding tickets now? I remember a while back they used to give you something that told you how much the ticket would be if you wanted to prepay. I didn't get anything like that this time?

Well I just got my first ticket ever
75 on a 55. $3 a mile over, 20 miles over = $60.
Not too bad, I don't know how many points.
Continuing this old thread, I got the option to "prepay" instead of appear in court. What is this, what are the advantages/disadvantages? I was clocked on the Toll Rd. by a standing cop on the side with radar pulling over $30k+ cars.
Anyone ever prepaid a ticket in VA? I'm clueless.

I'm surprised you did not get nailed on 44 or I-64 out of VB. They like to hang on the on-ramps and tag you as you go by.
I can say that I-64 just out of Williamsburg is the worst strip for getting tagged. Got to watch out for those boys!!
"P" is paced- because his little "toy" was prolly not calibrated and would make a hard case in court.

The worst thing you can do is prepay the ticket. You are admitting all guilt and you'll have to pay the fine, take the points, and get raped by your insurance company. You need to get a court date scheduled and try your best to keep the points off your record, even if it means you have to pay a higher fine and/or court costs. Many times in court, they'll drop the points and just make you pay the fine and court costs.
