Got Killed by a '91 Mercedes SL 500...BRUTAL!
Ok I was with a buddy driving home last night when we find ourselves in a cat and mouse game with two dudes in a gorgeous white SL 500...We finally pulled up to a light on Rt. 110 (long island) and we both knew full well that it was ON...I turned off heat and VSA and left it in full Auto (D5). He definitely got a great launch, and I really did not (I wasn't concentrating on the changing light for some inexplicable reason)...But I think that even if I got off to a perfect start, there was no way I was going to take that thing.
At 85 mph, he had about 4-5 cars on me, and I decided to give him the flashers to signify defeat and we gave each other the thumbs up...We chatted briefly (seemed like good guys) and I found out that it was a 91 and automatic! With no mods whatsoever! I was shocked...didn't know those things were that fast!!! Then again I didn't even know those things had V8's under the hood either. I guess I better be a little more selective with my races!
Anyone know the 0-60, quarter mile times and horsepower on the SL 500 and what size displacement the V8 is (5.0?)??? By the way my Type-S is stock (silver, spoiler only) and I had a 3/4 tank of gas. And another side note...I know that street racing is dangerous and that I'm going to hell for doing it, so anyone that is going to rip me for doing it can save it, thanks! Yet another side note...the driver of the Mercedes said that he really liked our car!

Well CLS stock is fast, but not like king of the streets.... Those V8 are fast, I cant really find the stats of a 91, maybe someone in the site can give you more info.... But one thing for sure, EVEN if you have a good race from 0-60 or even till 80.... After 80mph, those thing will start to pull HARD on you (you know how the tranny perform). It's pretty much the race will be over at 80mph+.... I think with header, cai, and exhaust, you will pull harder and probally will close the 4-5 cars gap..

FYI, the 2001 SL500 also does 0-60 in 6.1 but the base price is $83,800. The SL500 has a 5.0L SOHC 24-valve (3 valves per cylinder) V8. It puts out 302hp @ 5600rpm and 339ft*lbs @ 2700-4250rpm. The compression ratio is 10.0:1. The car weighs 4125lbs.

Sorry to hear your loss to the big star conv. They are sleepers to be at the weight that they are. I love mine to death, and I have work done to my. There is a large aftermarket for those cars. Beware of any Benz with a number marking of 430 or 500. They are V8's. The SL600 and S600 is a V12!!!

My father is also and owner of a 1991 500SL,and believe me when you push on the pedal it's like that car gets pissed off at you and you can't lean forward from your seat until about 80mph. The numbers that I retrieved from the official M-Benz homepage were 322hp and 332ft pd torque. Believe me it's all of that.

Yes, the car does weigh 4100lbs but when you drive it there is no doubt that it is something to be reckoned with. And yes, 5.8 is a fair time to place on it. Stock, before the engine is broken in, the 0-60 times were around six seconds. Ours has almost 60k on it so it may be faster or it may be the same.

Rio40,
I have all ReenTech work done to both of my Benz's. You can go from mild to wild. They are pretty high on prices, but the work is wonderful and I have never had a problem. You should check out their web site. They are down in Fl. I have everything done to the SL500. It only has 9000 miles on it, and I have the SL 7.4 package done to mine. It has a 7.4 liter V12(they took the stock 6.0 from Benz and worked it) and has over 600hp!! Zero to 60 times are about 4.1secs. And the best part of all, my car looks stock as everthing. You would never know it unless you look under the hood or at the brakes.
You need any help, just email me. I will give you better numbers on my car when I get back home. I am on a Biz. trip right now.
