Got the Brembos on my car

Hey Guys,
If you are not happy or confident in your CL-S brakes, get your wallet out because these brakes rock. They went on Friday with Porterfield R4s pads. After bedding them in Friday and Saturday, I went to Thunderhill race track today and I can say that they were awsome. After breaking from speeds upwards of 110 mph all day long, no fade, and still powerfull. I have been holding out on you guys with recent mods, including Recaros, SSR wheels, 5 point harness, rear strut tower/harness bar, and more. If I can burrow a digital camera from work, can anyone post emailed pics for me?
T.I.A.

That's my next mod!

According to www.autocarparts.com the choices are 12.4 or 13" brakes. Which one did you go with? Do you have the 17x8 SSR wheels? Looks like you can only upgrade the front brakes?

THAT SOUNDS GREAT!!!!!

I would love to know what size you got 12.4" or 13".

I am still waiting on TireRack's callback to let me know if the SSR Competitions have the correct caliper to "spoke" clearance.

As a note: TireRack "claimed" that they work with Brembo to let customers know what Brembo kits work with what wheel (of it they don't fit). The blurb was in the May 2001 issue of Sport Compact Car.

I need to call those guys back -- I think they forgot my callback already

The 13" Brembo is supposed to fit in a 17" or 18" wheel, IF the offset between the outside caliper face clears the wheel spoke.

I was told that the stock wheels will NOT work with the 13".

(Once again, I'm trusting what people at Tire Rack and Brembo are saying. I read some stuff and decided to call them for myself...)

Now don't be shy. Please inform as to what size Brembo kit you have and also what size wheel they are on.

Does anybody know for sure if the Brembo 12.4 will fit on 17" rims, stock or otherwise.

Eric, what you said;
The 13" Brembo is supposed to fit in a 17" or 18" wheel, IF the offset between the outside caliper face clears the wheel spoke.
I'm not getting this. Is there a way to self measure this? Please elaborate a bit.

Thanks

Eric,
I got the 13" Brembos. I no longer own the stock wheels so I don't know about clearance. I have a set of OZ street wheels and SSR comptetions for the track in 17x8. The calipers fit both of these wheels. It really is a function of width and spoke clearance. 17" diameter wheels will fit if you can clear the caliper width. Brembo has something like a template (its actually some measurements that you can take) to help determine what clearances are needed to determine fitment. I found this confusing and so I drove to Comptech with both wheels and test fitted them off the car using each type wheel. You can go to Brembo.com and get their phone number. They were very helpful on the phone.
This is a front upgrade only. You can always change rear pads, lines, etc. As far as stopping the car goes, this is all you will need.

Yes, I called Tire Rack, and I know the stock 17's wont work -- look at my sig. I have the SSR Comptetitions in 17x8 +48 offset.

The diameter is ok *and* I have the Brembo 12.4" and 13" data sheets.

I called tire rack and they haven't called back today (was gone so I couldn't call today).

I want to know if they will fit on the SSR, and I have the tech diagram, talked to an engineer, but I guess I'm going to have to get out the calipers and take some guesses.

Putting a rollbar in next? Highly recommended for harness wearers.

The Brembos are nice!

Mike,
Thank you for posting my pics. The back seat is out of the car and I am going to use the same carpet that is in the front to cover the rear area (formerly back seat). This will kind of give it a finished look, and still weigh almost nothing. Normally my trunk has the carpet covered fiber board, spare etc. but I have not put in back in yet. I take it out when going to the track. I can fit 3 track/wheels in the trunk that way and one in the former back seat area.
I have not changed the rear brakes other than using the same porterfield pads in the rear and braided lines. The rear brakes do so little in this car, that it would be cosmetic only. As you can probably tell I am into power, weight loss, handling, and stopping ability only. (Nothing wrong with looks if you are into that)The suspension is done, springs, sways, konis, rear strut tower brace. The engine has headers , AEM (in route) and a very small 14lb. battery to replace our heavy stock one. Another benifit of the new brakes that no one seems to notice is they are lighter, including the two piece rotors (unsprung weight and rotational mass)All good! I am 6'3 and the Recaros allow me to clear the roof with my helmet on. The harness holds me in the Recaros. It never ends. You can start to justify almost anything. I have promised myself that I am nearing the end to my spending on this car. We'll see.

Kevin, you're welcome. I haven't stopped staring the pictures all night.

If you are ever planning to pass through the Sacramento area (on your way to Comptech, or Tahoe perhaps?), please let me know, I would love to be able to check out your ride in person.

Kevin:

What springs (or coilovers) are you using to lower the car?

I noticed the center caps are missing from the SSRs -- when they installed the Brembos, did you have to loose the SSRs centering adaptor hub rings?

I am interested in putting in the 13" Brembos and now I know they will fit (we have the same wheels).

Astroboy:

I sent you the GIF/BMP, Doc files, and rep # at Brembo. Did you receive them?

Hey Guys,
Let me answer some of these questions. CLpower, Autopower in San Diego will custom make a rollbar for you. The seats were a bit under $600 each and almost that again for custom made brackets and mounting. With the inflatable lumbar support in the drivers seat, they are more comfortable than our stock seats. I use the 5 pt. only on the track. The stock belts are retained in both seats.
EricL,
The springs are comptech. The Brembos have no effect on the center cap of the SSR wheels. I showed one pic with the cap on and the rest without the cap. These are my track wheels and normally I don't drive them on the street. You can't have the center cap on when you drive on the track. You won't pass a tech inspection. If they come off at high speed they can easily go through a windshield or radiator.

Sweet ride! Love the brakes, but 2k for them is really making me think twice, even though the CL really needs better brakes.

It's nice to see someone doing some significant mods to a CL. I'm not too concerned about performance...but those brake are really cool looking. I'm going to look into getting a set for mine, though I'd like to have the calipers chromed.

WebToker,
The SRS (air bags in this case) don't work. Jens went through lots of research for me to try and come up with a solution. It was going to be very complicated/expensive and only sort of work. (Thanks again Jens for trying) I only weighed the stock passenger seat. It was 55lbs. The drivers seat might be a little more with its additional motor.
Kevin
P.S. While I am not entirely comfortable driving on the street without airbags, it is no longer a daily driver. On the track I don't want the airbags. I am fully restrained with the five point harness and neck brace. In the event of a low speed crash, I don't want the airbags to deploy, expensive and unnecessary.

webtoker i would say there is probally 100-120 lbs to be saved w/ the removal of the rear seats. Where most of the weight is, is in the metal plate behind it that you remove.

CLPower,
The rear seat and storage bin combo was just over 40lbs.

How has the racing been going? What type of competition are you normally up against? It looks like ya should be pretty competitive in ya class.
