The Cobra is a really fast car. The Bullit isn't that bad either.

I was thinking about staying w/ Ford (still have my Tbird), but I figured I'd wait to see what the next generation Mustang will look like. After driving my Ford Tbird for 8 plus years, I needed to move into something more refined. The Cobra is kinda the last hooray for the current gen. mustang (instant collector car ??)

The only problems from the factory was a unbalanced drive shaft (which Ford SVT fixed) and section of the rear quarter panel where they "forgot" to apply the clear coat (which they also fixed).

As is, I think it will blow away a Z06 and is damn good competition for the 03 Viper. I think it would come down to the driver... and that is at less than half the cost of the Viper.

Almost makes me wish I had one instead of my 02 CLS. My only real beef with it is that between the flowmaster exhaust, the eaton sc and the big-ass V8, you can hardly hear the guy in the seat next to you.

Ford also greatly overstated the previous Cobra Mustang's output horsepowers. This info was leaked out from Ford by some frustrated employees. There was a website dedicated to disclose Ford's defects in its car lines through those insiders, and Ford threatened to use Court actions to shut it down.

how bad is the fit and finish on the cobra? and how cheap are the materials inside compared to the cl-s?

The material are not that bad but the design is VERY antiquated. We joke that they must have taken the climate controls straight of the Model-T (round plastic knobs). I love the CLS interior. I don't think there is one that compares to it in the price range. Here is a pic I put together of the CL/S w/ NAV compared to the 2003 Cobra interior. When Ford get their act together and make an interior like this, with the performance and exterior they already have I will be the first to get on the waiting list for that vehicle!

I agree that ppl buy it for the performance but I don't think I would cost Ford that much more to modernize the interior a little. I am not saying user more/better materials, I am not saying improve build quality, I am just saying move away from a decade old design. But hey...some ppl might like that interior but not me. Even my roommate...the one who OWNS the cobra likes my CL/S interior better. Right now only option to get a CL/S like interior and Cobra performance is a 80k-100k, Audi, Benz or BMW. If Ford would spend even 7k on a new interior and sell the Cobra for 40k with a nice interior I would buy it in a heartbeat.

A 03 Cobra will get worked by a Z06. The Cobra isnt really competition for the Viper or Z06. Acceleration it is, but anything else the Cobra shows its age.

I've driven both the Z06 as well as the 03 Cobra, and I think you would be surprised how good the performace of the Cobra is...acceleration aside. Steering is very tight, little to no body roll and it stick to the ground very well. Go drive one...you maybe very surprised...

Ive driven a 02 Z06. but not a Cobra. Drove the 02 Cobra though, which is pretty much the same suspension wise. The Cobra is not in the same league as the Z06 in handling or braking.

You can easily upgrade the Cobra suspension, and it will be cheaper than a Z06. You can make other mods as well.

You can mod any car to outhandle a Z06 or ferrari or kill either in the 1/4 mile.. I think you guys are missing the idea of why Cobra's are so popular

Anal rape acceleration/Decent Handling/Decent Braking for ~35K ...

For A car that can be modded & custom built to be an ass raping 1/4 mile car its a shitload cheaper to do then most other cars...

Amen...

Also FYI the suspensions of the 02 Cobra is not the same as the 03. The have stiffened it all around, especially the rear to eliminate the wheel hop caused by the irs. Bottom line the Cobra costs under 35k, the Z06 is 45k. Put 10k in mods on a Cobra and it will out handle, out break and out accelerate a Z06...and if you live in Dallas, we can put money on that.

There is only so much you can do with the SN95 chassis. A good friend of mine owns a performance company who builds chassis parts for the SN95 and Fox body. His modded to hell 95 GT with a built engine, Baer Brakes all around, and custom supension on all corners isnt much faster than his stock Z06 around gingerman.

A 03' Cobra is 34K...a Z06 is 52K. You could take an 03' Cobra, get full Bassanni exhaust, a 3:73 gear, and some drag radials and run a high 11 sec 1/4 mile.......and save about 10K to buy a nice daily driver!!!!!

no way a 03 cobra is better than a Z06..Z06 is N/A....no boost, also, no way an 03 cobra will outhandle a Z06....Z06 is also 10 times more stylish than a cobra. for my money, id spend the extra 10 grand and stick with the BEST...not a first year car with documented problems and a big clunky body....ill take the Z06 any day of the week over an 03 cobra.

They stopped production on Oct. 7th and and started again on Nov. 12th. The problem was a batch of defective head gaskets that manifested iteself as engine overheating issues. Hardly a major "engine problem"....and easily fixed under warranty.

From Edmunds:

2003 Ford Mustang
SVT Cobra 2dr Coupe (4.6L 8 cyl S/C 6M)
TMV $33,925

2003 Chevrolet Corvette
Z06 2dr Coupe (5.7L 8cyl 6M)
TMV $51,645

Now I was never real good at math but according to windows calculator $51,645 -$33925 = $17,720

In the end, its your preference which you like better but I think you will have a hard time convincing anyone here that the Z06 is a better car for the money.

With that extra $17,720 you could make an 03' Cobra out perform a Ferarri

i know for a fact, chevy is still dumping all their cars, ESPECIALLY 2002 models, including all vettes....you can probably get a brand new Z06 for around 46k-48k with 0% financing. everyone knows MSRP means nothing, especially in this day and age.....i dunno, maybe i just am biased towards chevy....ive owned 3 of them...but then again, my first car ever was a 1973 mustang that i worked my ass off to buy when i was 16...it was kind of a clunker but i sure loved it...all i know is that the Z06 is a MUCH tighter package all the way around and also, the Z06 doesnt need to BOOST to get good power...that 03 cobra is already boosted, a Z06 is ready for a supercharger to add ANOTHER 100+ hp to its already UNREAL 405....where would a 03 cobra be then??? its kinda like comparing GTP to CL-S..everyone bitches and says "well, of course the GTP wins in speed contests because its boosted...compare apples to apples here"....so technically, Fords competition against ANY vette is its 260 hp mustang GT..thats it. but if you want to really want it to be fair, put a supercharger on that Z06 and THEN see how you feel....bottom line is that the cobra is fast as fuck for little $$$....but the Z06 is much much more refined and respected and desireable....its pretty much a personal question as to which youd rather have and if you can justify the price of a Z06....

jimcol - Nicky quoted Edmund's True Market Value (TMV) not the MSRP. The TMV is supposed to represent what the cars actually sell for.

I just skipped to the end, sorry if any of u guys already said these things.

American cars, especially mustangs do not hold their value well, hopefully ur cobra will beat all odds though.

Second, i definetly would have gotten a saleen if i were you. They are original and have different body kit and are more nicely equiped, they have varying degrees but they can equip alot more hp then the cobra.

Also i see you've double ur post from 8 to 16, congradulations.

I hope you enjoy your car, its pretty dam fast as it is, good luck.

The Saleen S281 (the cheap one) has 425HP and costs 55k...I'll give you the looks and the originality though. In contrast my buddie's Cobra with 2k in mods for about 36k invested has 508HP...again it is all about bang for the buck and personal preference. I am out.
