Good paintjob? how?

I have decided to repaint the whole car after someone keyed most of it. How many Layers of what kind of paint and how many layers of clearcoat should i get if i wanted to get a nice paintjob, keeping it within reasonable limits (what do you guys think the average amount an insurance company is willing to pay for a complete paint job).

well almost every paintshop/bodyshop sprays at a different rate for a coat. I had a guy that would paint my old car(when i had it) for 500 bucks(with paint). I thought I'd watch him(to see why he can spray a car so cheap) he sprayed 3 "quick coats" which in my opinion equals about 2 healthy coats cause he was spraying quick. the reason i didn't get my car painted was i didn't think he did a good job.
but a rule of thumb for me is 3-4 healthy coats will do. but i've seen guys with 2 "thick coats" look nice:P

I dont know if this is true or not, but i heard if my car gets keyed, and i claim it with my insurance, that they would paint the car if the entire car was keyed, and monthly payments would not increase. Is this true?

I feel for you, yemeni ---

My fiance and I bought 2 CLS's in Feb '01 and a month after the purchase both of them got keyed to hell the same night. The emblems were all 'debadged' with a fukin screwdriver leaving canyon deep scratches everywhere. I got both repainted but the work wasn't all that great (not that the factory paint on the CLs/TLs is to begin with) so that just makes it all the worse.

Good luck to you .......

sorry to hear that Superlimit, it really hurts to see your car violated after you try so hard to keep it looking good. 8 cars got broken into on the street i was parked on, but instead of breaking into mine the shameless bastards felt they had to key the whole car up , I swear if I caught them doing it I would have scratched them up the same with my bat.

i got keyed pretty bad once too..it was pretty much the entire car and i got a new paint job, but then I got keyed AGAIN after that and i just left it cuz its not worth it. Oh the second time wasn't as bad, only 1 door. Insurance covers it but i think it will go up in the future (at least mine did)

oh and just wonderin, but where do u guyz live? I live near LA in California

My CL-S was only 6 months old, someone keyed the whole side of it in a Cotsco parking lot in the Valley. They scratched it deep, hit the door, and a little on the quarter panel, then a bit on the front fender. Used that crappy turtle wax color stick for while, then I contacted my insurance, I have $250 deductible, the body shop cost was $1265!! Of course I only payed $250, looks great, my insurance never said anything to me, nor did my rates go up.

Claim it through your insurance, thats what you pay them for, to pay for it yourself is too much, the cheapest estimate I got was $850, and that was from a decent shop, with the insurance you can get it done right from the best at a low cost to you, this of course is assuming you don't pay for it in the long run with your rates going up. Hopefully you have a low deductible.
