Going Topless!!!

I believe there was a topic like this way back when, but i can't find it in the search, but i'm seriously looking into chopping off the hood and making my CL-S a convertible. I was waiting until the warranty runs out and at the rate i drive it won't be much longer.

I wanted to get some input on what maybe some con's against this conversion. One of my main concerns it the quality of the top, material wise and how it will hold up when driving fass. This is where i would like some suggestions from those that might know of a TEXAS shop that specialized convertible conversions. I'm looking for a quality reliable job and am willing to spend aprox. $5k or am I dreaming?

The reason I think that is a possibility is because our trunks are so big so there would be plenty of room to hide a drop top.

Would like to here what u think fellas think and some help with the search for a place would be great.

I didn't mean only chopping of the top, but getting an entire conversion done, and think chopping off the top is part of what has to be done to put in a rag top.

I've seen in Louisiana a convertible conversion honda prelude, 91-95 style Legend coupe and an NSX. I just never inquired about the job so now i have no idea where to get info on it now.

how about making it have a glass removable top like the NSX or corvette or supra??? that would be sweet!!!! and it would maintain more of the structural integrity of the car

5K? More like 10K minimum and too much to worry about. Custom jobs that are truly weatherproof could be ALOT more than even 10K

Agreed... I think it would cost well over $10k. Not to mention all of the body work that needs to be done, but all of the chassis reinforcement that would need to be done would cost a pretty penny. Not counting the fiting motors and switches and custom building a roof....now that I think about it... you're looking in the $15k to $20k range.....

Looks like I'm gonna have to save up for an M3 Conv. after all.

Damn damn damn, thought making a conv, wouldn't cost that much, I mean Y would someone spend that much to convert an old legend or a prelude for that matter? go figure, I would be willing to spend the money I saved up for a bike on a convertible conversion, but a guess it's back to super bike.

There was a company that made all kinds of convertible-conversions for the major car co's.. ASC, maybe? I think they still do the Solara conversion. But for $5k, I don't think so.

I know Toyota makes the Solara, but they don't actually produce the convertible one on the same assembly line. Toyota ships partially complete Solaras to ASC, who then completes the convertible conversion part. (Or at least that's how it used to work...)

Might just be easier to cram the CL-S engine into a Solara. Maybe add the 6 speed too.

Yeah...the ASC does all the coupe to convertible conversions for Toyota...if you are going to do it...send it out to them.

Hell , I say go for it! for 5k Im sure you could find a place that would give you a removable glass top, I think it would look sweet.

But hey, Im not the one shelling out the $$$, I just want to see how it would look---Naw, its not practical at all to conert your CL-S--but think about it, you would be one of a kind! Think of it as a hobby--Don't take the view that--cars depreciate and it is a waste....You could really take pride in it!....If you are seriously on the edge and need someone to justify it to you--just let me know....I can justify just about anything!

Now get on the phone and get it moving, I want pictures by March!

I'd say it would cost around $15k to make your CL-S look like this:

I've seen this done to 2 Legends and 3 Accords in this place in Queens, NY. This was when I was in high school, so I'm not sure if it is still around (only 7-8 years ago.) The people paid no more than 6g's for the job. Perfect custom work, no leaks or cracks whatsoever..every time.

They were al lretractable hardtops. I sat in one of the accords.. It was a 94 accord from what I remember. I'll ask my friend who knows a bunch of guys from there. I tihnk the place is called Evolution, or Revolution..the name was long--sonuded similar to that. But definitely not a 10k job. I tihnk one of them was done for 4.5 And the follow up on a few after 1-2 years was still perfect.

kinda 50/50 on how it would look. It's almost too big as a converible....it may end up looking like those Chrysler serbring convertibles.

BUt you are right...it would be trick and one-of-a-kind.
