I watched the interview with the guy from the NTSB and I loved his reply to the reporter's question. She said "Ford, Chevy and others claim that it is harder to make a truck safer than it is to make a car safe, what do you say to that?". He repiled "Well it's not true cause Toyota already figured it out." Muahaha...... I'm glad at least someone in the governement isn't hostile to imports!

Speaking from experience, I can tell you that the F-150 holds up very well in an accident. In april of last year, I was driving a little over 50 miles an hour on a four lane road in my 1998 F-150 4x4. I got within 30 feet of an intersection, and the car at the stop sign on my right, did not look in my direction, and pulled out in front of me. I barely had time to even tap my break, and I slammed into his a-piller head on. I was going over 50 mph when I hit him. I knocked the car I hit over 50 feet. My airbags deployed, and luckily I was wearing my seat belt.

I was the only one who was able to walk away. The other 4 people in the Ford Contour I hit all left in ambulances, and I believe that if I would have been in a car, I would have been very messed up or dead.

This is the reason, after recieiving my insurance settlement, that I immediately went and bought a 2001 F-150 SuperCrew 4x4. My wife proudly drives it now, and I feel good knowing how safe she is.

I saw this test on DATELINE the other night.

Those trucks are VERY heavy and well built.
In this type of test, that’s a bad thing because nothing gives when you hit a non-forgiving wall.

Imaging the same speed crash into a small car like an Accord or Taurus.
The Truck driver would probably have a broken leg, but the occupants of the car would leave the scene in a helicopter or body bag.

This is exactly the point that I was going to bring up. The only problem I could see is that there are so many SUVs and trucks out there now on the road. The chances that two trucks would get in a serious accident are more likely now. I would like to see how well the trucks would hold up when they pick on someone their own size.

Small cars are subject to the same 40mph offset crash test by the IIHS, and some of them did very well. Check out the scores for a 2001 Civic here:

The thing you are not thinking about is that the weight of the auto/truck affects the amount of force it has to handle in a dead stop crash. 5000 pund truck better be stronger than a 2000 pound car because it has to handle 5k pounds coming to a dead stop. And the other guy was talking about hitting a car full force on the side with the front of his car.... OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO BE WORSE OFF. If you were hit on the side by a car/truck you would probably dead (as shown by these test results).

No matter how fast you were going, when there is an accident involving one car broadsiding another car, the car hitting the side of the other car is almost always gonna survive if additional collisions did not happen after the initial impact, i bet you could have survived that crash even if you were in a hatchback civic...

My Dodge Dakota pickup did extremly well in my accident. I ran head on into a group of Palm trees at ~40MPH with no seatbelt. All I got was a broken leg. My two friends in the car had their seatbelts on and suffered no injurys cept for minor cuts and bruises. I thank God I wasnt in a Civic or any little car because I know I wouldnt be here today. Like the guy with the F-150 I believe real-world incidents are a much better judge of safety than some crack ass labratory tests.

ps: RIP Dakota

well its a ford!! also its a truck . lets face it , most people dont buy the thing for safety . ofcourse they probably expect some protection. I hate to tell ford that the institues crash test is more realistic than the government , but then again it is the best selling truck , so why the hell should they care.
