Getting scr@%ed on trade-in?
Getting scr@%ed on trade-in?
I'm trying to get one of the last CL Type S 6 speeds that are probably out there, and have settled on an anthracite one. I want to trade in my wifes 2001 CL-P (she then would inherit my Red 01 CL-S, and I would get the 6 speed). I'm astonished by the low trade-in numbers I'm getting offered for her car - ranging from $13,800-$14,700. It's a black/tan CL-P with 44.5k miles, in excellent condition. As much as I want the CL-S 6 speed, I don't think I can swallow that much of a loss in just 2 years...
Is that all these cars are worth? What do you think? Am I getting scr#$ed? I ran an ad in the local paper for a week at $19.5k, and got only 1 call. What's a fair price for this car (edmunds.com and NADA.com notwithstanding)?
Thanks!

I too have a 2001 CL-p and would never trade it in or sell it until I outright own it. Yes, you are gettin' the BIG WEENIE when you trade your car it to the dealership. They are going to make 4 to 5K profit, not you, if you "sell" it to them. If you sell it to someone else, you get the resale value (not the trade in value). More or less, Edmunds, Kelly and all the rest are acurate. The dealers knows this and will still try to snake you out of your ride. It's all about the money. So, keep doing your homework and don't get desperate.

Drive down to Price Acura in Camden DE, they will do better than that. They can get one of the cars from PA/NJ, so it's no sweat to trade. They've always treated me right & they offer decent prices...
Pm me for their contact info if your interested.

I was offered 18K for my '01 CL-S with 30K miles on it....just enough to pay it off, then the car got wrecked....and I got 18K for it...just enough to pay it off. Cars are such a wasting asset. :thumbsdn:
Like others have said here, trade values are LOW right now on many cars.
All those 0% new car loans and cheap leases are dumping tons of “newer” used vehicles on the lots.
The CL is even worse because of poor sales and the fact that it was discontinued.
I’ve seen other guys here with 2001 Type-S’s getting offers in the 18-20 range.
Subtract the 2,000 dollar discount for the non-S and your dealer isn’t that far off.
If you DO trade, don’t forget to figure the tax advantage.
If you can get them up to 16K that would be a 6% tax savings of 960 dollars.
So you’re really getting almost 17,000 towards the new car.

Unfortunately, with all of the incentives for people to buy new cars, there is not much of a market for used cars. So its not a sellers market right now (unlike in real estate).
However, if you have a carmax nearby, try taking it to them--they always quote more than a dealer, to buy your car.

Well did you let the dealer know that you wanted the 6-speed real bad or did you hold your emotions back??..
One of the last 6-speeds!!.... Did your salesman throw you that pitch???....if he did and he got your attention with it, he is going to low ball you till you cave in ...
My advise... try what others have told you... see if they will go higher on the trade in value, if not... Get to stepping to a new dealership..
