Germany VS Japan
Germany VS Japan
Who do you guys think makes the best performance automobiles (after modifications and everything?), Germany or Japan. Please state some advantages that Germany has over Japan and vice-versa. Also compare technologies respective to each country, such as VTEC VS the 1.8T, etc. I always have this argument with my friends (they are hardcore VW/Audi fans!), and I want to know what everybody thinks so that I may prove my point. Also, what do you guys think is pound-for-pound, the ultimate performance car (try to stay under the $60-70,000 range). I think that Germany has an advantage in that they have better build quality, and the Audi Quattro system is pure genius (Audi says that their AWD is light years ahead of Subaru's, yet they never win any rally races)
My Vote: Japan (I'll elaborate tommorrow)
Japan=1, Germany=0
Peace

Who cares? A good car is a good car. Are you comparing individual models, or the country overall? Being German or Japanese does not automatically make a car good or bad. There are brilliant engineers and auto enthusiasts working on both sides. Just sit back and enjoy their product.
well at least you kept the american...and korean...cars out of this battle
even though i am a honda fan for life (btw i used to be a "ricer" and thought 4cyl honda's were the best things on earth), i also love the mercedes-benz c32 and slk32 amg...actually all of their amg models...mercedes makes some fine, classy cars...in fact, if i ever own two cars, the other one would be a benz...enough said.

Forget those two countries, i think Canada makes the best cars. One car company up there, i can't remember cause there's so many, just introduced the 650 H.P. "Gretzky"
I've heard it's fast in ice and snow also.

Are you talking about our snowmobiles or dogsleds?
i think some german makes have it because they ahve a history...benz and bmw have been around forever.
as for vw/audi, audi has quattro going for them and interior quality of materials.
vw got nothing but farhver...whatever the fuck that word is.
but japan has that stupid 278 or 267 or whatever that hp limit is for the jd market. if they were allowed to build cars w/ mucho hp for the world AND themselves, i think they'd do a better/sportier job than they're currently doing.

I think people are comparing things that cant really be compared. It is totally opinion based. Both countries have their ups and downs. Lets not lower this group to the standards of some that spend all day flaming all cars that are not theirs. I like them all , just chose this one cause it fit what I was currently looking for. and fit it well

Some auto makers dont follow that rule, esp. Nissan, and it's supposed to be gotten rid of later on

i like rice /c you get more for your money and they are fun cars. germans got some quality shit, but you pay the price(i dont think audi and VW r quality)i only like porsches. VW, a fact, they all fall apart. S4's ans shit are always in the shop. porsche is the only way to go for german. never had a single problem with our 993
Seeing how i work for a Japnese company and drive a Japnese car I'd have to vote Japnese.
I guess the thing i don't like some German cars are their ugly or way overpriced. Like example BMW's M3 suppose to compete against a Acura CL type S(over all there similer far as features and that stuff) a M3 a good 10-15 grand over the CL type S

Any CL is NOT competition for the M3! I doubt that thought even crossed any BMW engineer's minds!
Not to try starting a different flame war or anything, but some of you need to get your heads out of your asses. The TL/CL are great cars for the price... you get a lot of car and power for the money.
Sure, the 3 series or IS300 are more expensive and slower. And yes, it's unfortunate that snobs are attracted towards the brands. But both the 3 and the IS have more personality than the Acura and will absolutely devastate it in anything other that a drag race.
Sorry, I just had to vent after reading all the stuff that goes through this board. I've had a lot of experience with cars from both sides of the pond ('90 Legend Coupe, '95 BMW 325i, '97 2.2CL, '00 2.5RS, '02 WRX) and while the Acura products were always very reliable and well worth the money, they weren't nearly as much fun as the opposition.
Whether or not you want to shell out the money for more driving pleasure is your call, I suppose.
Ok, rant mode off, back to being happy.

I would say that Germany has the overall advantage, but most German cars are quite hard/expensive to modify (have you priced BMW mods!!). It is much cheaper to modify an Japanese car, and much more commonplace. Under 70K, the best car of the bunch in stock form is the BMW M coupe. I had the chance to drive one for more than an hour, it just kicks ass. But if you remove the 70K price cap, there are some extremely modded supras out there that are really fast, but I would take a Porsche 911 GT2, out of the box faster than any Japanese car I can think of

Well, this is a flame-bait, but here goes...
Well, the quattro system was banned from rally racing years ago because it gave Audi an unfair advantage (banned by the racing committee). I don't think it's been allowed back. That would explain the lack of presence in rally circles.
I'd agree on the build quality and add great safety features to the list. Granted, I'm a bit biased. I have an A4 2.8 Quattro and a 2001 A6 2.7T Quattro. The only thing my A4 has been in the shop for was when I've been hit (3 times in 3 years, rear ended every time). The A6 is only a few weeks old, so too new to judge. The safety features are amazing on both, though. The A6 has front and rear side airbags, unavailable on many cars, both German and Japanese. We were rear ended by someone doing 45 while we were stopped at a light (in the A4) an we were uninjured and the car had no frame damage. The woman that hit us (in an Integra, BTW) totalled her car. Apparently she was talking on her phone and didnt see us sitting at a red light right in front of her, but I digress...
Anyway, I think that both countries make some amazing cars Japan builds the NSX, Lexus GS series, the CLS, and used to make my favorite car the RX-7. Germany makes the M5, M3, CLK, S4 and Boxster S. All good cars in their own right. If I had to make a call and money were not a factor, I'd go German. If money were a factor it'd be tougher. I'd probably still go German because they tend to hold their resale value better, so lease rates are better. The only exception there is BMW. I've yet to find a BMW dealer I liked. I really wanted to consider a Bimmer this time, but the dealers in SoCal were just jerks.
The Acura Dealers weren't much better, but they're selling the TL-S as fast as they can make them, so I guess they have the right...
Sorry about the length, but it's late and I'm bored... :o

All I know is I'll never get a Ford, Chrysler or GM product (except as a beater). I also don't like Jags, too overpriced and they look like Taurses since Ford bought them. Its pretty sad when Ford actually improves the quality of another make.
Hyundais are... well Hyundais. Mitsutbisi is Chrysler... The only thing left is Toyota and Honda.
Saabs are still too pricey. Who owns Saab anyway?

Ford owns: Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo, Land Rover, most of Mazda (and the other Ford brands)
DaimlerChrysler owns: Jeep, Sterling, Mercedes, Chrysler, Dodge, etc. and most of Mitsubishi.
VW owns: Audi, Skoda, Bugatti, Rover, Lamborghini
BMW owns: Rolls Royce, Bentley
I miss anyone?

What would stop you from buying an M3 rather than the M Coupe. BTW. The M Coupe is the ugly sibling created by the M team. Do you mean the MZ3 Roadster (has the looks of the Z3)?
