Gauge Cluster

if i replace my gauge cluster, is there any programming that I have to do to it to make it correct with my current mileage? what all would I have to do? would it be able to sync itself with the ECU? does the ECU even record mileage?

I took my gauge cluster out the other day and the mileage was still there when I put it back in.

So it probably does store the odometer mileage some place else.
