Gas mileage with or without VSA ???
Gas mileage with or without VSA ???
More or less ? Give me your thoughts or facts......Someone mentioned driving all the time "unless its raining/wet", otherwise VSA is off most of the time.....Are they getting better or worse mileage ?

I read somewhere that VSA ON lowers gas mileage and since I live here in NoCal we don't exactly get harsh weather. I drive with it off and get pretty good gas mileage (>25 mpg)

I swear I heard someone say a LONG time ago (like, back in the H-A.net days) that gas mileage is better with VSA off. I decided to try it and I get better gas mileage too. The guys with the helm manual will swear up and down that it shouldn't make a difference, but I've experimented with at least 7 full tanks of gas by now. Just this morning I filled up and got 24mpg in the CITY! My highest ever.
For me personally, in 80-100% city driving:
VSA ON: 19-20.5 mpg
VSA OFF: 21.5-23 mpg
Supposedly, if the VSA light isn't flashing on takeoff, then it's not activated. That's what the Helm manual says apparently. I don't believe that. Here's how my car behaved before I got my springs:
With VSA ON:
Say you take off from a stop at 1/2-3/4 throttle. In other words, a quick take off, but NOT jamming the throttle down. In those cases I would get no wheelspin and no VSA light.
With VSA OFF:
Do the same kind of take off and I get at least a little chirp.
My conclusion:
Since the chrips don't happen when VSA was on, it's obviously doing SOMETHING even though the VSA light doesn't flash. (And if you're wondering, yes the light works. I can get it to flash if I mash the throttle from a start and VSA is ON)
Some people say that since VSA cuts power to the engine, then it should actually save gas. I don't think that's how it works. My understanding of things is this: When you press on the gas, the fuel is released from the gas tank. It's turned into power in the engine and the drive wheels are turned. If you give it TOO MUCH gas to the point where engine power will be cut, I don't see how gas can be saved. Because by that time, the fuel has already been released. It's basically just being wasted when VSA is activated because the gas has been used and combusted in the engine, but the power is NOT transferred to the drive wheels.

GoldTypeS,
Do you think that your improved gas mileage may be due to thorough break in of the engine, rather than VSA effects?
I too noticed a marked improvement in my gas mileage as I past the 5000 mark with my oil change, and I don't leave the VSA off.

I don't care if it makes sense, it works for me
I only use VSA in the rain or when playing on curves.Trending Topics
