Gas Light
Ok here is the low down... my gas light came on yesterday.... this morning i was gonna get gas before work but i woke up late and had to rush to work. 15 mi away. light was on the whole way and the needle is on E. Then i just realized i forgot my wallet in my rush. Think I will make the 15 mi trip home to grab my wallet and fill up the tank? or how much gas do we actually have left once the light comes on? I know on my accord when the light came on i had about 3 gallons left or another 60 mi before i would prolly die.

my light came on last night, and I have a 20 mile commute to work. I'm gonna wait to get gas until I get home cause I know i'll be fine. I think the most I've ever put in the tank was 15 gallons. Even if it seems like the light has been on forever, I always seem to have a good amount left.

The most I've ever put in with the light on is 14.8, but usually, I put in about 14.3 or 14.4. I might find out tomorrow, cuz I'm pretty low right now, and I'm plannin' on racing tomorrow at the strip, and I don't want the extra weight.

If you have and no gas light, it's nonfunctional.

Once I drove close to 60 HW Miles on the red-light... However, I would say 40 miles is the max you should do before filling up at the nearest gas station.
I can pump in some 17+ Gals.

From the Helm manual and the driver manual:
Fuel Tank Capacity
64.8 liters; 17.1 US gallons; 14.3 Imperial Gallons
64.8 liters; 17.1 US gallons; 14.3 Imperial Gallons
My light comes on EXACTLY when I am down 14 gallons, so my car has 3.1 gallons left.

But why quibble about one tenth of a gallon.

I've just went through all the conversions from US gallons, to Imp gallons, to Liters. My guess is that the tank is measured in liters and then converted to gallons (I could be wrong), and the tenths figure will change depending on how you do the conversion or round significant digits.

Just a reminder to those that don't know...our cars have a fuel fill up process that takes place when filling up. A vacumm is created while filling up which draws all the fuel vapors back into the canister and prevents over-filling. It would take me like an hour to fully explain exactly how it works in words but the overall----do not overfill your car. The end result...you could get gas in the two way valve...need to drop the tank to replace it...also you could permentently shut the orvr valve which would not allow any refueling to take place at all....only a little at a time and it would literally take you a half an hour tyo fill up ur tank. It doesn't state in the manual to not overfill or top off for nothing. Just a sugestion but don't bug out when your check engine light comes on and the dealer won't warranty a tank drop to replace a 12 dollar valve cause it has fuel in it.....

I keep a log for all gas fill-ups in my car. I have about 17,500 miles, and the two largest fill-ups were on 5/2/03 at Costco in Beltsville, where I pumped 17.175 gallons @ $1.599 a gal totalling $27.47, and the largest was a CRAZY 17.930 gallons on 5/19/03 at 1.599 in NoVa at Xtra Fuel totalling $28.67. For that fill-up, the pump had the ability to pump at a VERY slow rate, so I could see the fuel being pumped into the tube that goes to the tank, max-ing out the capacity. And yes, to those who ask, I have run out of gas on several (more than 3) times all with a spare gallon of regular so I could get to my destination.

You maybe right on this one.
From my experience, after the first click, you can pump 1-2 Galons more in short bursts. Harmful or not I do not know... But you can do it.

bullaculla, I have a firstgen and it my needle just jump around, and my light only goes off when I'm on or very near E. I believe only older vehicles, like early 90's had that problem ( or at least that was the case on Pontiacs and fords ). They didn't have that little can, of which I keep forgetting the name, that retains the gas when the car moves violently.
Ant7701 is right. Though, I'm kind of surprised our cars, firstgen or secondgen don't have spill valves. Hell, even on my 97 Crown Vic, I keep filling until I see gas coming from behind my rear tire. That prevents any problems and relieves pressure and helps stabilize the vacuum.
Do you guys know if the 2nd gen has an overfill valve? It would make sense.

I know that it's probably not good for the car at all but i always wait till i only have less than 0.5 gallons left and i always fill up to 18 gallons. the most i ever filled up was 18.6 gallons. I say the more gas you put in the better because you don't have to fill up as much cuz your tank has more gas. It's not good for the car though people.
