Gas!!

Ok we can all agree gas prices now are sickening. Is everyone putting premium in their cars too or am I the only one?? I just rode past a Shell and premium was $2.33 including the 5 cents off! Am i wasting money using premium?

but I would have said you were wasting money before gas prices got above $1/gallon. I've always used Unleaded Plus, and never seen any difference in gas mileage or performance.

for "the premium myth"

But hey.... everyone's car is different

I think the engine actually gets better gas mileage on premium so I'm not sure how much you save going to a cheaper octane anyway. Our cars get pretty good mileage IMO. Was reading on a Inf. G35 coupe forum and those cars get much lower mpg, one guy was getting 12, most get 15-18.

My gf's Maxima typically gets 18-20mpg (03 Auto), but she does drive a little aggressively. I get ~ 24-27mpg, depending on how many trips to redline and what highway cruise speed I am at. I get premium because thats what the factory calls for, and if you have a $30k car you shouldnt be worried about an extra $1.50 per full up.

BTW the higest I've seen so far is $2.47 for premium Shell. This gas staion is a fuckin ripoff tho, they are right off I-75 and are always 15-20 cents more than every gas station in the area.

$2.47... ha, i was lucky to find that price last week here in Los Angeles. now the 91 octane stuff is up over $2.50 easily, and that's at the cheaper gas stations, which are few and far between; the 87 octane stuff is nearing $2.40; so you all might count yourselves lucky that you're not driving out here where the traffic is super-yucky and the gasoline prices are near the highest in the country.

i was myself wondering if it would make a big difference to put in the lower grade gas... perhaps 89 octane stuff, as a compromise

any thoughts?

I was thinking the same thing. The gas stations are taking away money to hook up my car

If you live in places that only have 91, you will not notice much of a difference from 89-91. If you have 93+ & switch to 89 you will. I'm lucky in I don't have to drive much anymore. Last time I filled the tank in my CLS was 3 weeks ago. I filled up my Explorer 2 weeks ago, & still have 1/2 a tank in each. Going to NYC this weekend so filling the rental car up will cost $$ I'm sure.

Be glad you don't have a SUV like a Hummer to feed. They are lucky to get 10mpg. So quit the . You can sell you CL and buy a 2 wheeler.

yea theres no difference if you have anything higher than 91, the manual calls for 91 and you should prob stick with that, any higher octane rating means it is harder to ignite.

o btw, if you guys want to find cheapest gas prices, you should try www.gasbuddy.com, the cheapest in my area is around $2:43 at 76.

I can't complain since I am barely paying over 2.00 a gallon for 93 here in Joisey. I still drive anywhere from 100-600 miles a week w/o worrying about gas prices. I also average over 25mpg usually, and typically get 27-29mpg.

Thats what you get for having nice weather. Its 41* here right now.

I refuse to have pity for the high cost of living for people in nice climates. I say F U, if you are upset you can ride your bike, us northerners cant do that.

Normally i get 340, 350 miles per tank with supreme, when i use plus I get 370, 380 per tank, all highway miles. Anyone else notice that? 2001 cls

Why would you do that? Do you realize that premium is usually only .10 cents more per gallon than 'plus'? If you fill up 15 gallons on average that's $1.50 more for premo than regular. If you fill up every week thats $3/month(every other tank, per his story), $36 per year. Is that really gonna break you? Maybe I just dont get it, much like when people drive 15 miles out of the way to spend 2 cents/gallon less. Do the math.

And is supreme 93 & plus 89? Not all states have the same grades, so that makes a difference.

And I almost NEVER get less than 365 miles per tank, usually around 380-390. I do let it get down close to empty tho, as I can usually get ~ 15 gallons for a fill-up. My drive is 70/30 highway/city mix, but I drive very aggressively on the city portion. if I drove like a grandma & set the cruise at 70mph I could easily get 30mpg combined. I've done it more than a couple times. My mpg has been down a little lately due to letting the car warm up. I like it to be at least a little warm before I take off.

What octane is plus and what is supreme. Every gas station has different ways to describe the octanes.

I agree. I never understood why people fret over such a little difference.
Mobil SUPER for me every fill up.

PS….. Prices here are about 2.25 for Premium
I don’t mind paying it.
I like to fill up just to hear the SUV owners complain to each other.

The US has some of the cheapest gas prices in the world so our friends and neighbors can drive their gas guzzling large trucks and SUVs to the office everyday.
Half of the world's known oil supplies have been consumed in 100 years. Now with high demand in the 3rd world and China too it's all downhill from here.
Because of all the waste in the US, I say the higher price the better.

My Mom told me the answer to that a few weeks back- She said that most drive outta the way for that saved 2cents b/c they feel like thy are getting a deal and not tripped off, but you spend it in gas just to get there.lol. sort of like when you see something that is 1.99 you know that syht is 2dollars you just dont wanna admit it.
I say stick with anything 89 or up and you car will be fine.

Mane, thats serious, but in reality your gas needle or signal might be off. The bottom half of the tank is where the trash and stuff is so your car needs more gas. Thats what a ol' schooler told me, along with always fill up b4 you ge tto a 1/4tanks to reduce stress on the fuel system.

Wrong info.

A gas tank is always fed from the bottom. SO that means you would always be sucking up junk... which is not true.

Too many myths about gas.

Plus we have the highest cost of living and most driving. All in all, minimum wage doesn't mean nothing. Minimum wage doesn't cover driving a CL/TL.
