Fun with a GTI

Any of you guys knowledgable about VW 1.8T motors? I'm getting all excited b/c my roommate is letting me work on his car. I just ordered the N78 mod and he's already got the APR 93 Octane chip and an Oettinger kit that is still waiting to be installed. We're thinking about doing the DV 700 mod from Forge Motorwerks next and then the APR turboback exhaust.

I dunno. This is just a shot in the dark b/c our members are so universally knowledgable and I didn't want to go over to 18turbo.com and search forever to find what I needed.

Any hints guys?

sounds like you're on the right track. friend of mine has a 1.8t...good luck...shouldn't take much to extract power from that motor

I would advise against the race N75 valve if that's what you are referring to with the N78 mod. If APR or any other chip company wanted to run more than 15 psi of boost from a stock turbo they would program it that way. Pushing the stock turbo way past it's efficiency range is not a good idea. As it is you will see some boost spikes with whatever software your roomate runs due to the fact that the N75 valve is pretty weak. I am going to either use an electronic boost controller without my N75 or manual boost controller with to aliminate boost spikes. Boost spikes and running too much boost will raise exhuast gas temps and cause problems and power loss in the end.

As for the DV, I use a TT valve. $30 from a dealer. I never had a problem with my stock valve, but I decided to pick up a porsche 110 and a TT 710N valve when I went with my Stage 3 APR kit. I have tried both valves and they both work fine for me. The spring feels the same in both valves so I think they are really the same part but different numbers so porsche can charge a few $$$ more. The Forge valves are good, but I don't want to spend $150 when I can spend $30.

Suprtuner TV show yesterday had a bit about European Cars magazines "1.8T Challenge".

They had a couple of cars putting down 450hp. It really opened my eyes to see VWs and Audis putting up those kinds of numbers.

sorry it was a typo on that N75 mod... HAve you heard any people with detonation or other issues on this mod?

Also, do you have the part number on the TT VAlve? Is the part number going to be the same for the 180 HP TT and the 225 TT? For $30 I'll let him know and we'll go pick up one from the audi dealership later this week. HE's opted against running the Stage 3 APR kit for right now b/c of the 100 Octaine requirement. We can't even get that arond here except at the race tracks.

I'll let Ray elaborate but I don't think 100 octane is a requirement for the APR stage 3. I know Ray has a program for 103 octane but his stage 3 Audi runs on 93 octane as his car is a daily driver. I wouldn't think that the vw stage 3 is any different.

I don't know of anyone specifically, but I had some issues when i pinched a hose that controls my wastegate on my turbo and I caused overboosting.

APR stage 3 has 91 oct, 93 oct, 100 oct and 104 octane software. You can store up to 4 programs at a time on your ECU with APR. The GTI's have a tranverse mounted engine and make a few more hp than my Audis longitudnal engine.

TT valve part # 06A 145 710 N

here is a nice vid

thanks Ray Khan, I'll take your advice into consideration. We're gonna go to Audi and buy that TT valve tomorrow probably. As for the N75 I think we're going to go ahead and try it while carefully looking out for pinging and measuring A/F. If it gets too lean we'll remove it. I've heard of loads of people from 18turbo.com using this mod with no problems whatsoever and a gain of 10 HP. I haven't seen any people having issues of detonation or going into "limp" mode as I've heard it called on their forums. Thanks again.
