Fuel consumption question

It seems as though headers and intake have given the car a wider range of fuel consumption. By this, I mean that, when driven hard, the car with headers/intake gets worse mileage than when a stock car is driven hard. And conversely, when you keep your foot out of it, the car gets better gas mileage than a stock car.

Here's my experience:

1) When stock
Easy highway driving (< 80mph, keep a handle on the WOT passing to 100+ speeds): 27-30mpg

Hard highway drving (90+ crusing, multiple WOT passes): 24-26mpg

2) With headers/intake
Easy highway driving: 31-34mpg

Hard highway driving: 23-25mpg

My roadtrip this weekend consisted of both types of driving. Up to Vegas, it was a free for all. 85mph cruising and so many WOT passes up steep mountain grades that my CAI was giving me a headache!!!
On the way back, I got stuck in a traffic jam at Hoover dam, then crusied at 90mph for 60 miles (til I got a ticket - DOH!!), then cruised at 70-80mph the rest of the way and still made a few WOT passes up steep mountain grades. I still got 31.8mpg!!

Is there a technical reason for this? Jens??

I guess I should clarify...

is there a technical reason for a wider range of fuel consumption or is this just all in my head?? (Yes, I know there's gonna be a difference when you drive hard!)

When people talk about amazing stories -- I now know where to look.

I get great mileage in the 30 MPG range on some road trips, but you obviously don't have an urban area like we do. My wife's Altima and my car have done a test loop to her work place and while my car will beat her 4-banger mileage of 13 MPG (I get 16 MPG), there is no way that I can keep my mileage above 20 MPG with a good set of WOTs and urban stop-and-go cycles.

You have gas angels looking over you. That or you have some secret gas pump rigging device that we need to know more about.
