Free Thermoblok Spacers for someone Near Indy

Hey Guys,

Well I think I may be the first person in the world to have a set of Thermoblok spacers for a CL Type-S. I just ordered a set. THey have not had a CL available to dyno yet and they would install the kit and dyno the car for free if somebody wants to bring their car in. They are just north of Indianapolis IN. There is a map on their website.

$79 + $6 shipping. He doesn't have any intake gaskets right now though so I need to get a gasket or use sealer for the intake gasket. I'm getting the longer bolts, spacers and all of the other gaskets. I think I'll just get some gasket material and make one since I will have the spacer to use as a pattern. I didn't ask him if this was the first Type-S set they've sold but I suspect it is. I think they are waiting to dyno them before they officially release the kit.

well, according to the website the Honda J35 engine gained 8-10 hp and tq across the entire band. Definitely worth it, it's free.

yeah, I've seen it talked about, but no proof. Now that they have it for our car, I would like to see a dyno.

Posted in the thread on A-TL.

Do you know if they dyno-tune V-AFC II, as well?

I might be interested in driving down to IN for this, if they can dyno-tune my car afterwards. Of course I don't expect them to do the tuning for free.

They already have a dyno for the TL-P I believe. You can ask though. Just e-mail sean at the address Phipark posted.

These replace the intake manifold and throttle body gaskets correct? I'm assuming the throttle body "spacer" will not work with the Comptech S/C installed.

Correct, except you still have to use gaskets with them. Not sure about the S/C and I doubt they would do much aas the compressed intake charge will already be hot when it hits the intake. Really need an intercooler.

I wonder if the intake manifold spacer would have any benefit with the S/C installed as well?

The website says its used with many turbos and superchargers.

What about turbo or supercharging?

The tensile strength of the phenolic material is certainly high enough to withstand any level of boost. Remember that the increased pressure of the intake charge is contained within rubber and silicon hoses held with hose clamps. Outlaw Engineering knows of customers that run ThermoBloks in addition to turbo or supercharging.

Raising the manifold would not allow for proper alignment of the elbows to the blower outlet.

Whoever dynos their car, be sure to register the ECT readings (hard readings from the ECU) as some of the power gains could be masked.

IMO, in this application the EGT gases will still have to pass through the manifold raising the temperature regardless of what heat transfer is limited by a spacer. In other words, there is little to no benefit. Just touch the cover plates on the manifold. It is hot because of the EGT gases, not convection heating. This heat transfer will still be present unless they block the EGR port. If so they are in violation of federal law.

They don't block the EGR port. I put mine opn this weekend. They do seem to keep the intake manifold cooler. The cover plates and sides of the plenum are cool to the touch after a spirited drive. After sitting a while the manifold heats up but it just gets warm. Before I couldn't keep my hand on it. Will be interesting to see what the dyno brings. I'm just wondering if adding 1/4 inch to the intake runners is effecting the powerband at all.

On a side note. I bypassed the coolant to the TB when I installed the spacers. The car was sluggish and didn't pull well in the upper RPMs. I was going to remove the spacers but when I got the upper intake cover off I smelled raw fuel. Hmmmmm. I decided to hook the coolant lines back up and try again. The car runs fine now which leads me to believe that the heated TB does more than just prevent freezing. Bypassing the coolant made my car run really rich.

There would be no benefit. The exhaust port of the head is going to be about the same temp as the header. The intake has a constant flow of cold air going through it. It only gets heated from heat transfer from the heads. The spacer reduces this effect. Actually my manifold is cool to the touch after a drive.

When the kit is officially released it should include an intake and TB gasket. I had to get my own but I have a prototype set.

Send an e-mail to Sean at sales@outlawengineering.com . He should be able to tell you when they will be available or he may have another set he will sell. Seems like a pretty decent guy.

The results are in.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...05#post1010905

At long last, we have results...there's a ton of information, so I'll try to recap here, but if you want to see all the raw data, PM me and I'll email the file to you. If I can get the charts from Excel into a format to post, I'll do so in the next couple of days...

To give you a little background, Sean (from Outlaw) kept the car most of the day. He ran the car for about 60 mins before the thermoblock, then installed and ran the car again for another 60 mins...about 5 test runs before and 4 test runs after. He ran at different speeds per gear, etc. Temp. outside was about 80 deg. with humidity around 58%. Oh, I don't have a CAI, just stock (this def. makes me want to get moving on replacing soon)

Overall peak gain is 8.6hp (4.4%) & 9.2 ft-lb (4.4%) of torque at 4900 rpms. At 5000 rpms, there was an overall increase of 7.8hp (3.9%) & 8.2 ft-lb of torque (3.9%).

Before mod, after 40 mins of test driving, the intake manifold temp got up to 179 degrees, after mod, temp was 149. The longer the engine ran, the bigger the difference was in engine before and after temp.

I think that's the important stuff you'd want to know...basically it's a great mod and if you have a CAI, your results can most likely turn out better. As for Sean at Outlaw, he was very friendly and professional...I certainly recommend giving him a shot.

Cheers!
