"flashing the ecu"?

"flashing the ecu"?

My friend told me that he had his ecu flashed. He said that his car had a rough idel. Now he says that the car is much smoother at idel. Please explain

it means altering the ecu ...in his case probablly fuel maps ignition timing to solve the problem...re programming part of his ECU...the acura cl ecu is non flashable
