Fix for the Megans resonance

Finally got tired of the cheap Megan header resonance (cricket, bug sound) took my car to a Meineke specialist and came to a conclusion that the sound is definitely coming from that extra flex they added in the front. That flex is such a waist to have there; I guess their fitments were so crappy to begin with that they had to put that there. Specialist removed the flex and added a strait pipe, we also installed new gaskets, and for the first time since I have had these headers they are just as quiet as stock, have a nice G35'ish sound to it at 3k rpm. I paid 65 bucks to get this done, so if you have the crapgens and do not want to go back to stock cause of the gains, I highly recommend you to go and do this. If you do not have Megan’s, "DO NOT BUY THEM" unless you get it for half the cost and you want to go thru all this...

wow thats great to hear because i was trying to give mine away for free as long as the person did the swap for me to stock... the hissing sound was a little cool and fun in the begning but then when i was driving on a quiet road i just wanted those damn crickets to STFU allready! I'll pass by Meineke tomorrow and see what the deal is... Any info on what i should tell them exactly so they dont fuck up anything? And which flex pipe is it just to be sure, the first one front the front or the second thats closer to the CAT?

Take that first flex out, no need for that even being there, ( notice comptech, and other headers don't have that there cause they are sure of their fitment) Megan was not sure of fitment and they added that crap for flexibility with the install. A good welder wont even have to remove your down pipe, only by the cat to place a new gasket since they will be putting pressure and moving that pipe around

I have alpha werks headers, and at idle and any time i tap the gas pedal, i hear ticking sounds from the engine bay, also at 2500rpm it has like a medal sound to it and sounds like crap.

Don't think that sounds like header issues, that sounds more like the infamous Acura CL/TL valve ticking that Acura avoids fixing under warrantee and the metal sound might just be your CAT cover, when it's cold it makes like a tin can sound, that can be fixed by any local muffler shop

today i went to the muffler shop , to put my resonator back on the car, because when i 1st bought the car i read on hear that some one on this forum has done it so i did it but now i finally got tired of the noise. when i asked the guy to cut the flex pipe off the headers he looked at he funny and sayed why would u want to do that ? and i sayed because its making noise. and he sayed your resonator dint make any noise why did you cut that off ? and then the guy dint want to do it for me and i felt like a dumb ass and left. Now that i have my stock resonator back on i can still hear my stock exhaust sound and i was wondering if its supose to sound like that or is it supose to be quiet ? and sould i get a new exhaust ?

ok i went to midas and told them to put the streigh pipe in by the flex pipe and they said "um thats illegal because it causes your car to make more noise and they would fine us $15k". Im like wtf putting a sreight pipe by the flex pipe which is there for fitment issue is illegal because it makes the car louder? I was like its there for the headers to fit right not to queit it down. Hes like no sir its illegal... are these ppl fuking stupid or am i missing something? I think im going to take the trip down to NJ just so i dont have to deal with idiot like this...can you let me know when you are free so i can come by and you can take me to the same place you went? Thanx

Just took mine to a local muffler shop to remove that first flex pipe and see if that works for me... he also made it to where i never have to use collector gaskets(something he invented called a "header buddy") it helped reduce the resonance i hope this flex pipe removal makes it all go away... i'm also having larger pipe ran back to the stock mufflers b/c i'm afraid to put aftermarket on(don't want it to sound like a fart cannon or anything)

CT doesn't sound like that.
If you make the pipe bigger you may loose back pressure. That will result in loss of low end power, & more noise.

All you guys that asked for this stuff and got told no needed to specify better. The shop that said it was illegal probably thought you mean you wanted to replace the catalytic converter with a straight pipe. You should have also specified that you only wanted "the front flex pipe on the exhaust downpipe" cut out and replaced with regular pipe.

don't put heat wrap on the bottom pipe... the heat will get too hot and the pipe will eventually crystalize the pipe and crack it

That's odd, did you replace the gasket that goes in between the downpipe and the CAT?

yes.. that has a gasket.. but where the headers meet the a pipe he welded in a piece that will never have to use collector gaskets... pretty cool.. b/c i was having leaks there at first of the install..

i guess the 4th batch??? i paided a BIG 45 bucks for them! plus the 60 to do the "header buddy" so 105 bucks for some headers that produce some pretty decent gains!!!

yeah it works great.. and the welded piece in the place of the first flex pipe made the resonance almost dissapear completely... instead of the whole rpm ban sounding like a cricket.. i can only hear it slightly at 2800.... i'll take that for the 60 bucks he charged me ha!

before u got the 1st flex pipe taken off did your car sound kind of like a cracked out g35 ? because thats what my car sounds like with megan headers and stock exhaust. I was wondering if it would sound a little more quiet if i took off the front flex pipe ?

it sounds "about" the same... except around 2800 rpm's... it kinda has a tin can sound.. raspy though.. not the loud tin fart can sound... throater overall...
