First SC problem

My car is at the dealer, but they're gonna have Shad from Comptech take a look. The problem is that my car has been surging on cold startup. I literally didn't have to hit the gas to move, then until completely warm it wanted to stall at any stop. I had it in 5,000 miles ago for the same problem and Comptech diagnosed it and replaced the FPR. Well, the dealer said they got the exact same error code, so back to Comptech. I hope they get it right this time, i'll keep you guys posted.
Oh yeah, i was running rich and my gas mileage improved by 2mpg, but my power was down

Any comments Scalbert, SC dudes ??

Possibly it lowers fuel pressure significantly during idle. Do you have a Fuel Pressure Guage? If its FPR related, its one of the reasons one should not run 80+ psi fuel pressure consistently on these systems; they are bound to fail.

Other issues could be:

(1) TPS sensor moved?
(2) MAP Sensor blocked somehow
(3) Clogged injectors?

What is the code (DTC, if any) thrown... you said Honda sees a DTC.

Not sure what the code was, they'll tell me tomorrow.

Bummer... sorry to hear that you're having problems with the S/C. At least you should be able to get it fixed before the meet. Also, are the ECU/ESM connections soldered? If this hasn't already been done, you might want this done at the same time.

I mentioned this thread to the Tech at the dealer, he's going to discuss it with Shad as soon as he gets a hold of him. They can keep the car for as long as necessary, i just want them to get it right this time.

If not, we'll be chasing an MDX through the hills.

Red Rider, I see what you mean about the great relationship you have with your dealer and the way they work with Comptech. It's always a concern that it gets into a finger pointing session - Acura problem or Comptech problem. Good luck on a speedy resolution.

Sorry to hear about your car problem. I don't know if this is the same as what you are describing or not but during the cold start up the engine does race some. The RPMs go to about 2000 on startup and I have noticed from time to time the RPMs dip at idle or upon deceleration. This is very rare though. Even though you gained some MPG the loss in power does sound concerning.
I hope your troubles get resolved.

Knowing the code will certainly help. I can think of several other items (IAC, TPS or even a sticking SC bypass valve) it could also be. But knowing the code will help poitn us in the right direction.

IS your s/c belt tight, and have you soldered your ESM connection? My engine would surge when it was cold, but since I did the above it's really smooth.

Glen did you notice this:

Sitting at a stop, the RPM's would jump around as if the ECU was searching for something?

make sure those connections on the ESM are SOLDERED, 3 of us had this problem, those connectors they supply do not bite enough.

...Sorry Red Rider, but you're not going to scare me out of getting Satin Slayer's SC next weekend. You're just gonna have to face it that you'll be having some F/I competition at the Portland meet.

BTW, what is this ESM that needs to be soldered? Is it the E-manage?

It is the device which comes with the kit that the MAP signal before the ECU. It's purpose is to limit the MAP voltage so that the ECU never sees the boost.

No, this surge is strong, as i said you don't even need to hit the gas and the car would buck forward.

The belt has been tightened or checked at every service, it does squeak with the AC on but they told me the belt is as tight as they can go

I definitely mentioned the soldering of the ESM.

Hey, no problem, this is minor compared to the fun i've been having !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully, Comptech will get it fixed and maybe this will help anyone with a similar problem in the future.

I'll see you in PDX

So they are going to swap out your FPR then?.... or your fuel pressure needs adjusted?

He replaced the FPR last time. Shad is picking it up from the dealer this afternoon so i'll have Comptech lookin it over. I'm sure he'll get to the bottom of it this time.

So, your fuel trim values went to beyond -18% or so. If it is the FPR then it is not pulling the fuel pressure down with vacuum. The first thing I would check is the fuel pressure, IMO.

My last visit to CompTech to fix a problem with my S/C was very interesting. Both Ryan and Shad worked on my car. It was like watching brain surgeons operating on someone's brain. They were amazing to watch - competence, precision, quality and speed was their mode of operation.

Guess its running rich at idle. Scalbert is correct - after a certain percentage of correction (18%-20%) the ECU throws a code. This is only during non-WOT conditions, I believe. Having a fuel pressure guage would have helped with this problem. If the fuel pressure is at 65'ish PSI during idle (vacuum on), then it will definateley throw that code... I've had it before when I tried the Vortech FPR a long time back!

I think the surge might be due to your b-pipe and exhaust, I can arange to have oem parts sent to you for a swap . J/K I hope that your car gets fixed soon .

I think the problem occurs when you run high fuel pressure through the FPR for long periods of time. This is why no production FI car runs a rising-rate regulator.

Clean your air filter recently? My car has had surging problems twice, after cleaning and oiling the filter. I figured I put too much oil on and some traveled down the intake, onto a sensor.

Quick update. I talked to Brian at Comptech today and he did mention that he soldered the ESM, and he thinks it's running fine now. He's gonna keep it for a few days to check the cold startup. He said that when they ran the tests that they couldn't find a problem with the FPR.

And no, i'm not swappin with you

Can not STRESS enough to you guys that those connectors they send attached to the ESM are garbage.. my car runs like a damn dream now that I soldered the ESM into the ECU wires..

Glad the problem was fixed Glen, just keep us posted..
