Finally.......new S4

Audi is unveiling the sporty top model in the A4 range. The new S4 is making its debut at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. Like its predecessor, the current version is also available as a saloon and an Avant. The heart of the new Audi S4 is quite clearly its engine - a further refined V8 with chain drive at the rear and a swept volume of 4.2 litres. It produces 253 kW (344 bhp) and a torque of 410 Nm. The S4 consequently sets clear benchmarks in the B-segment: a benchmark for supreme power development resulting from the engine?s large capacity, and a benchmark therefore for unmistakeable dynamic handling.

The eight-cylinder engine?s thrust enables the new Audi S4 with 6-speed manual gearbox to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds. It takes just 20.6 seconds to reach 200 km/h, whilst the top speed is a governed 250 km/h.

Edit: Missed CS post, ah whatever

RS4 will not be imported.... It is too crazy for US roads... Glad we will have the RS6... however you need to sell your left testicle to buy one

i was hoping it would be faster than a m3...
fuck..i have been considering this car for a while now...

5.6 seconds? a cl-s + 5k in mods would do that...

kind of dissapointed..

I know, me too......don't think I'm replacing the Dodge, so I was considering the S4 next.

Apparantly, the S4 forum at Audiworld is up in arms...dissapointed.

About the photos, they are working for me......don't know what the issue is, wish you guys could see them.

who released those 0-60 numbers?

maybe its just the people who tested it?

i mean, why would audi do this?

a 250hp S4 that performs basically the same as a 344hp S4??

doesnt make sense...

im keeping high hopes here...

Looks aside.......the numbers do seem a bit suspect (conservative).

We'll know soon enough. Price wise, I wouldn't expect anything less than $47-$48k.

IMO, Audi's six spokes on the TT and all the other S models are the nicest looking stock wheels on the market. Aren't they refered to as "Avus Style" (a la concept car, the avus). Whatever, I love those wheels.

Im able to see the pics now.....as for the performance numbers, i just simply dont beleve them, it should go MUCH faster then that, thats the same 0-60 as the 350Z....as for the looks, i never muched liked the looks of the new A4, i think the exterior is rather plain, the interior is awful on the S4, and can someone please explain to me the point of there stupid S4 and S6 advents, there just stupid in my opinion....i think they could have done much better with this though. Id definitly take an M3 over that ANY day.

Me and my boy are sitting reading these numbers and they just dont make sense. A v8 should be much faster and the article says the peak HP is available at 7000RPM. That is a rice mobile, dont understand. I am hoping for real numbers to be released at the show.

I don't understand why so many people say that A4's interior is the best in class, to me it looks very ugly.

Audi has always underestimated it's numbers. Wait till actual tests start coming out..

I am glad I got the 2.7T version, the torque level is the real difference..

This is the torque curve and hp curve, with the 2.7 T with just a chip.

Here is a stage 3 car:

wait wait wait.... so they got rid of the turbo V6 S4 and replaced it with a V8?? awwww... i would rather take a V6 turbo than a V8... looks like they r going after what Mitsubishi did... replaced the 4 cylinder turbo Eclipse with a stupid V6..... *SIGH*.....
Disappointed.... stupid V8 has 340+ HP and 0-60 is more than 5 secs... i think audi just made the Joke of the Year....

I am now doing my best Elvis impersonation, "Don't sit on my blue suede seats!".
The Audi interiors always look better in person. I was really much more impressed with old A4 when I saw it in person.
If this car has AWD doesn't that slow it down a bit? Let me race an M3 in the winter in an Audi anyday.

Damn, that better be a typo on the 0-60 numbers... When I first heard about the 4.2 liter V8, I was like there is no way Audi can fuck this up, and I assumed it would be my next car... well, if that interior holds true, and those 0-60 numbers hold true, I'll have to hang on to the CLS until something else catches my eye.

The Audi forums have a right to be up in arms...This thing should do at least sub 5s out of the box, AT LEAST!

Doesn't the current S4 do 0-60 in 5.4? Why would a lighter (I've heard the v8 will be lighter than the 2.7T),more powerful car do 0-62 in 5.6??? I am vexed!

Re my 0-60 people claim 4.9 0-60 with just a chip. With downpipes and high flow cats, maybe a tad bit faster.

It's all in the launch, it's hard to master, but when you get it, it's neck snapping

Yo BLK CLS - Your S4 is phuckin PIMP! Nice interior. Have you had any electrical problems with the car? ALSO, do the s4 come with HIDs? I am really thinking about getting a used 01-02 s4 and modd the hell out of it. As a previous audi 90 quattro owner, I do say, AUDIs interiors are first class. Even my old 90 interior was way classier than my cls with tons more gadgets. S4s are PIMP! I hope the new one is better in person than paper.

No electrical problems is something that plagued Audi in the 80s.

The S4 in the U.S. comes with Xenons, however, for some reason they didn't bring them to Canada. I guess they were too lazy to recrash an S4 with xenons. Anyways I got the Xenon Conversion.

S4 are fun as hell to mod, because every mod on a biturbo car gives so much extra.

Anyways my dad's car is the 2002 A6 4.2 with 300 hp, and tiptronic and it is pretty beastly.

With the same engine with 343 hp, in a lighter car with a 6spd, it should pull off pretty good numbers.

I think it is underestimated, because the S8 in Europe with a 4.2 V8 with 360 hp pulls 5.4-5.6 according to a few sources I have seen.

Either way it will be Audi quality and performance, and some tuners are talking about Supercharger kits already, but if you want a car that is very tunable I would get the 2.7T current version.

Sorry if I am going off topic!

BLK CLS - I know you have driven your father's a6 4.2. With the mods on your s4, which is a more highway beast? Yours or his?

Audi S-4

The 0-60 must be incorrect. Like someone stated earlier... the
car has nearly 100hp more than its predecessor AND doesn't weight too much more!

I strongly suspect 0-60mph in the 4s range... mid to high 4s is my call.

Plus, its AWD... launching shouldn't be a problem at all. Take
the Lancer EVO or Subaru WRX... 270hp.. 0-60 in 4.5s easy.

What's the problems here?

The problem is NA the engine doesn't have the Torque of the biturbo car. Look at the torque curve on the graphs I posted, there is almost full torque starting just above 2000 rpm.

No way, it weighs 300 pounds more than the already heavy new A4.....I think 5.3-5.4 is a realistic ball park. Either way, it won't be a slouch by any means.

I think Volvo is going to score with their new S60R.....300hp (320hp is rumored though), Haldex AWD, 6spd, 18's with Pzeros.

i think we are looking at it the wrong way.

for Audi, new A4 BODY is amazing. I think it looks really good, and it will sell.

Audi cannot continue to offer the S4 in the old body style, they had to offer it in the new body.

They were not looking to improve they S4, I don't think they were trying to make a M3 killer. They just wanted the new S4 to have the same body as the new A4 while keeping performance the same.

The 2.7 engine in the new body would be too slow for this car with this weight.

so basically, nothing has really changed..

Just the same S4 performance numbers but with the new body style.

The downpart is for enthuisiasts that want to mod their cars...you wouldn't get the gains that you would get with a 00' S4...as BLK has explained.

Though I think it would have been good for audi to make the new S4 with the same material they use to make the A8 (i think it is lighter) and that would significantly drop the pounds...making this car def. a M3 killer.

0-100km is 0-62mph I think.
Well the M3 CSL is coming, 360hp, and LIGHTER than the M3 now.

I do like the V-8 in a small car though.....just the sounds

looks sick...

the interior, while bland in pics, im sure wont dissapoint in person... the materials in Audis are top notch.

they really do need to change the wheels tho. something new.

im very dissapointed in the numbers as well... i was looking forward to this car... and those numbers are simply shallow.

i do too expect some very conservative numbers tho. maybe their trying to make BMW feel more confident till it hits the streets.

at the same time tho, im sure you could put the turbos from the RS6 on it without a prob

i guess ill be sticking round for the redesigned bi-turbo 300-some odd horse TT-RS

Took the words right outta my mouth; Audi interiors are first class.

Even the interior pics of this new S4 are nice; everyone is dogging it, but not saying why they don't like it.

Don't like the wheels, they need a new style....while the car looks good, it looks too similar to the standard A4. Don't like the black molding running at the bottom of the door, hopefully they will offer painted mirrors in place of the chrome ones.

The interior will definitely be nice and well crafted, but the 4 spoke wheel has to go.

Maybe they didnt make it a turbo cuz many people were chipping the old turbo and expecting audi to fix problems under warrenty? I dunno.. it was a guess.

I still think a V8 in a small car rocks.
