Finally hit the track

Hey guys.

We finally had legal street racing at California Speedway on 3/24. I have an 01' CLS with an intake only. I raced my buddies BMW 01' 330Ci auto, and my buddies 88' Mitsu Starion. I honestly thought that the BMW was going to take me. I really was not planning on racing because i thought i had to work, so i filled the tank to about 3/4's. I removed the spare (like it will make a difference lol) and all the other shit it had in the trunk. Here is the outcome.

BMW CLS
R/T --- .345 --- .395
60' --- 2.443 --- 2.272
330 --- 6.686 --- 6.369
1/8 --- 10.167 --- 9.689
mph --- 70.75 --- 73.79
1000--- 13.162 --- 12.594
1/4 ---15.684 --- 15.032
mph --- 90.35 --- 92.93

The mitsu hit like 16.0 flat, i cant find the slip when i raced him. I think he ran at 91 mph and had bad wheel spin. It was about 65 degrees, i ran twice and could not break into the 14's. Both times i ran the same quarter mile. Exactly the same except for the R/T time. It was beautiful to see the look in his face when i took him on his BMW, after all he paid about 10,000 more for his car. Later he went on about how he din't do the oil change for 3000 miles and he was completely stock blah blah.

I dint use the SS mode, i left it on auto, and i "power braked it" to about 1800 rpm. Any suggestions to get a better 1/4 time? (w/out bashing)

nicely done! those are pretty decent times for a nearly full tank of gas. any idea if you need to correct for elevation?

how crowded was it? are you using stock rubber and wheels?

tips would be run on <1/4 tank of gas gate shift w/o hitting the rev limiter, control your wheel spin and get the headers.

According to the mfg and trade rag times they are . ..

. . but this is exactly what I always try to get folks to understand . . . there's tech times posted by tuners and pro drives, and those of the real world . . . that's why you'll see folks here beating cars that are technically faster . . . anything can happen on the street.

It's really hard to do via written explanations, but your launch times were really bad . . . did you have a lot of wheel spin? if so ease up on the 1800 launch . .. and drop your tire pressure a bit . . . try 29-25 ftlbs . .

Also, use SS or gateshifting . . . I've knocked as much as 1/2 sec off my times with shiftgate vs Auto . .

Then there is tires . . . what sort of wheel and tires do you have?

The manuals are quite a bit quicker than the autos.

My sentiments exactly.

Also, what sort of burnout did you do.....how long? In or out of water box?

I don't usually do burnout with these type of tires . . . too expensive and it's too hard to get these cars to really heat/smoke 'm up to really help much . . . unless you are sraying out of the hole, turbos and SCs may do it also . . .

I'll let you know as I bought a set of wheels and tires just for track use and will try and smoke' m good . . . I'm tired of putting on new tires every 10k-12k

thanks for the reply guys. I have stock rims with yokohama avs es100's 245/45/17 in front and 225/45/17 in the rear. Yes i know that 245's are big and most told me that they would not fit, but they did and work just fine.

The BMW owner is a really good friend of mine and he did not have the DSC activated he placed it on manuel mode and shifted the car himself. I lowered my tire preassure to about 25 psi and he lowered his to about 22 psi. He has i belive he has goodyear F1 (???) w/ 245's in the rear. He did claim he had bad wheel spin but he ran twice and his other run was 15.71.

Elevation is around 1500 above sea level.

The track was sooooo crowded. I got there at 10:00 am, gate opens at 12:00 pm, inspection opens at 2:00 pm, races started at 4:00 pm, i got to run at 5:30 pm and at 8:30 pm, after that i got bored and went home. Way too many people, but fun nevertheless. Plus i have braggin rights now

California speedway is having street legal races tomorrow if anyone wants to go. I have been practacing my gateshifting... hopefull, all goes well and i'll brake into the 14's.
