Finally happend to me, hit & run...Now with pics

On my way to work this morning. Some POS popcorn removal work van. Decided to slam on his brakes in the middle of the road for no reason, none, clear road in front of him so bam, I rear end him at like 5-6 mph. Then he takes off. I thought he was pulling over so I pulled over & he never stopped. I was unsure of the damage to my car so I didn't chase him. Luckily the cars behind didn't hit me.

So my hood is folded in with my grill. The hood is popped up about 3 inches.
Headlights are scratched & cracked
Bumper is undamaged, but is misaligned from the impact.
I haven't tried to open the hood, I don't know if I can even.
Car is drivable, no engine or radiator damage.
Would have been nice of someone to stop who saw what happened, but it's FL, no one did.

I'm going to file a police report, but have to go to the city(where it occurred) police department with the car so a cop can look at it.
Because I rear ended I'm at fault no matter what, so I expect to be raped from my insurance co.

On a positive note my hood has been scratched bad from someones kids for a few months now. That will now be fixed along with my headlights that had condensation in them.

sorry to hear that fuzzy :shakehead It is absurd, the lack of respect people have for others and their property. My parents always instilled in me "do unto others, as you would have others do unto you"...

I can relate: before my bike got stolen, a spanish fellow in a landscape truck cut me off (well, cut right into me) and made me fly off the bike. He stopped to see if I was ok, and took off

Maybe it was because you lobbied for the traffic cameras ooh! can we turn this into a fuzzy dibs thread?

since it was a hit & run just tell your insurance company someone hit you, not that you ran into the back of someone. sorry to hear about that though.

wont matter all too much since either way collision will have to cover it --- only good thing is no ticket... and his insurance doesnt have to foot the other guys repair bill ---

something else doesnt add up tho, it wouldnt make sense for the other driver to run unless he was drunk, suspended license, no insurance etc.... im not sure if he was the one who would be at fault in that case

I know the feeling. Back in Sept 04 some asshat in a Mustang was speeding through a school zone in the suicide lane southbound on Andrews leading up to Sunrise Blvd. I swerved into that lane to avoid another fucktard running a stop sign. Well, I managed avoid the stop sign runner only to be hit by the clown speeding along the suicide lane. The Mustang nailed my driverside front wheel collapsing my upper control arm. The wheel was at practically a 90 degree angle. Shocked the hell out of me; however, I did not have the presence of mind to get the SOB's license number as they speeded away from the scene. Plenty of people witnessed the incident, but no one stepped up to lend a hand. Took the car over to Premiere Body Stop at 5001 N. Federal Hwy 33064; they did an excellent job at putting the car back together.

It's south Florida, I'm sure it was all of the above.

Fuzzy, I'm sorry to hear about this. It is amazing to me how BAD the driving is down here. I thought it was bad in Jersey...Until i drove down here.

Best of luck to you and your CL, I'd love to come take a look at it when its back to shape.

Try to get some estimates to get it fixed out of pocket. Depending on your deductible and how much your insurance will go up, it might be the way to go. You can do some upgrades while your at it, carbon fiber hoood then get it painted. As long as the damage isn't that bad.

Damage will exceed $500 I'm sure. Hood, grill, headlights, plus anything under the grill that needs to be replaced(grill support likely), all the hardware, plus paint & blending. May need a new bumper too.
The van driver probably didn't have a license & was an illegal so he ran. As alxmlr789 stated it very common down here.

and I was thinking about the hit. You can say that the car was parked on the street or backed into a parking spot. You came out of where ever and thats what you saw...

Same type of damage happened to a friend of mine when she was in a parking lot and a brand new MDX backed into her Lude. The headlights were done, the fenders were done and the hood was bent in half... Bumper was OK but also was misaligned...

considering the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. at least the driver pulled over. he was screwed because he had no license or registration with the car. the sheriff was really nice to me and said "shit happens." i wish it didn't happen to me though, .

your insurance shouldn't go up that high if this is the first time you rear ended somebody. with the front end damage you explained it'll probably be somewhere around 2500-3500 dollar fix, but paying your deductible will cover all that expense and hassle. no problem

Couldnt you say someone backed into you hard in the parking lot as you were walking up, and they saw you and drove off? and you didnt have enough time to react and thus chase them down...?

I could, doesn't matter though. It's a claim & my insurance will go up. I already have a claim from the accord I rear ended with my explorer last year.

Neither of these were my fault.

But I do enough & get over many times over the years so I can accept it.

I'm not into that.

The damage looked worse. I had to pull the grill out to try & open the hood, So it bent back into shape a little. Still can't open the hood though. I'm not going to force it till the adjuster comes. Let him witness me do it.

Estimate is in, $2700, & that's with my deductible taken off.
What are you going to do

I am definitely not going with this insurance co after my policy is up. This is the 2nd claim I've had,(some may remember the incident with the accord I rear ended) & they have been VERY high I feel for the damage that occurred. Maybe that's why their rates have been a good $400-$500 less per year then anyone else.

Car is dropped off at a body shop, A Lexus dealer body shop, so I'm hopeful it will look good when done. My local body shop I have been using for 6+ years folded.
They said worst case time frame is 3 weeks. But will try to get it done in 1.5-2 weeks.

fuzzy, don't take this the wrong way. It's hard to show tone of voice over the net. I'm genuinely asking, not berating. You are an attorney correct? How would this case be judged? I thought that pretty much everywhere, the law is that if you hit someone's rear, its your fault for not having a safe distance behind the person ahead of you? I hope everything works out.

Yeah that's general the law. However there are mitigating circumstances involved.
If it's deemed my fault, then fine. Right now it's not on my mind. I will not know how my rates are going to be effected till I have to renew the policy. That's not till next June.

No, I have it, I'm canceling that coverage. It a useless $20/day, $200 max. All the rentals were $30+/day. Just useless.
I'm driving the suburban now. Just filled it at the tune of $128. That should last me 2 Weeks I hope.

Ouch. I'd keep the insurance company out of it and also forget going to the cops to make out a report. Having a rear end on your accord last year and then adding another this year, that's going to hurt your premiums and possibly they might cancel your policy.

If your looking for someone good to do the body work, hit me up in pm, the guy doing my car is pretty good an is in pompano.

It's already done with, Whatever happens happens.

It's only a car. If anything I'll get basic coverage with some POS company when the time comes.
I really can't be concerned with it. I may not have a job next year, who knows?

What pisses me off more is if it was a car & not a POS work van there would have been zero damage. Then the guy ran? I'm really pissed I didn't chase after him. If I had my carry permit I would have shot his tires out!.

My fiancee had a claim with Geico before about 1.5 years ago and the way they classify an at fault accident is insane.

If the damage is under $2,500 we will call that a minor infraction.

If the damage is over $2,500 we will call that a major infraction.

So for someone who has a major claim and the damages are $3,000 they told me it was the same as a person with $15,000 in damages. Either way, its a high risk claim and you are getting stuck with that.

So once you get over $2,500, just hope that they find more wrong with your car if its older, atleast get your moneys worth since it will be counted as a major claim either way.

I hate insurance companies.

Its potentially a good thing that the guy kept going. If you hit at such a low speed it could have been determined that you were following to close in which case it would have been reckless driving against you. In accidents involving a front-end to rear-end collision the blame is typically placed on the driver who was in the back ~ i.e. you. I was at a light once and the fuck in front of me took his redneck foot off the brakes and rolled back into me, buckling my hood and trashing my bumper. To make a long story short-the cop blamed me for being to close (I was 5-6 feet away easy...). Anyway, sorry to hear it (not surprised though being as I have lived in Florida). If you have full coverage you could get this categorized as "vandalism" by describing the incident so that the car was parked "safely" and you were nowhere around. If you decide to do that make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot and say you were somewhere that could end up having cameras. ... if you actually want to find the shit head and you can remember the make and model of the POS that hit you, go to the dmv and pull the gone in 60 secs stunt; get them pull the records and track his bitch ass dooooooown!
